Well, I finally bit the bullet.

After nearly 6.5 years, I've bought a new PC.

Not having gone *completely* potty, I declined Vista and went with XP
Pro. It's a nice rig.

I still have my old 98SE machine, though, and intend getting a year or
two more out of it yet. I'm going to keep it for certain functions and -
in due course - to set it up as a dual-boot machine with (probably)
Xubuntu, 'cos I want to get my head around Linux OSes.

So although you won't be seeing as much of me from now on (and I may
have to start hanging out in The Group With The People Who Forgot To
Wear Their Tinfoil Beanies), I'll still be reading regularly and asking
obvious questions from time to time.

This is an ideal point to thank all the people on the group who have
guided me through the minefields over the last 6 years: Glee, PCR, PA
Bear, Franc, Don, all the various Bills and 'absent friends' such as
Terhune and Dundat.

Remember, don't go talking about me, 'cos I'm still here! :-)

Hmm. I will say several prayers that you perish in XP-irradiation only
half as quick as it takes in Vista! I always did like you, Stapley!

You are welcome. Terhune has just fallen into another earthquake &/or
accidentally put himself into a deep state of hypnosis!

Only 6.5 years? ;-) My main computer from 1998 to the beginning of 2006 was a
custom box that started out with Win95B and was then set up to dual boot with 98SE.
In 2006 I finally built a new box which currently has 98SE and XP dual-booting with
XOSL boot manager. Visat has not found a welcome here yet. ;-)

I hear you. My old 98SE box sits in the other room and will eventually get a Linux
or two on it.

Many of the folks that used to hang out here moved onto the XP groups, and now many
of them are moving on to the Visat groups. It seems there were far too few beanies
to go around....

I'm still running the same setup which began in 97 as win95. (Until
97, I refused to leave Win3.11). A year and a half later I installed
Win98 over the top of 95, eventually upgraded to 98SE. This same
installation is what I am using right now. The same hard drive was
moved into 4 different computers since then. (The original computer,
a P266, died in early 2006). I moved the drive to a P300, then to a
PII700, and just recently to a PIII1000. This past August the
original hard drive died, and only because I knocked it off the desk.
I had just made a clone of it to place in this PIII1000, and was
moving the old drive back to the PII700 when I dropped it.

Yeah, I had to do some modifications when I changed the computers, and
a few times I ran Windows install on top of what I had, thus saving
all programs and settings. I once had a spyware attack make a big
mess, but I had a backup on another harddrive. I've installed and
removed hundreds of programs. I even upgraded to IE6, and then
downgraded to IE 5.5. I manually delete all junk files a few times
per year, besides many utilities to clean the registry and such.

I am still using the same email and usenet software, the same ver of
winzip from 98, and many other older programs. Everything still runs
fine. Some people dont understand why I dont upgrade. My answer is
simple. I have a computer to USE, not to have to keep relearning the
software and OS. I know just what to do when I need to accomplish
something without stumbling around, and I know how to fix 98. I also
still use some dos apps from as far back as the early 80's, and they
are still useful. I do not dual boot, but the computer boots to dos,
has all my old colored ascii C: prompts and crazy batch files. To
load Windows, I have a secret batch file, not "win". When I shutdown,
it goes back to dos.

I tried XP and could not get used to it. I found it clumbsy, awkward,
and irritating with all the stupid questions it asks. I disliked it
and just plugged my old 98 harddrive back in. Actually, I have WinME,
Win2K, and XP on separate harddrives. I can run ony of them on here
if I keep changing drives, but I just like 98 the best. I considered
changing to WinME, and found the USB more efficient as far as drivers,
but I have heard far too many times that ME has major problems.
Otherwise I would have changed, because ME is really no different as
far as look or using.

If I ever have to upgrade, I really dont know what I would do. I wont
even touch Vista....

My 98 setup is still fine. I guess I weakened...well it was that plus
the fact that mlb.com switched overnight to Silverlight for most of its
site video, plus the fact that the latest version of Winamp doesn't
support W98.

Due to a screw-up, the company building it for me initially put on Vista
Home. That's too weird for words. I think it's designed to appeal to
those whose aesthetic senses were burned out of them.

That's already happened, but only because I opened the fridge door on my

Well, if you could find no substitutes for any of that, I guess your
time had come to go & suffer the perils of XP-irradiation, just as you
have said. I, personally, am not sure I care much for baseball anymore,
anyhow, after the Yankees last trouncing!

Hmm. Thanks for the report. (Sounds like when my time comes I'll
probably go for XP too, then, if it's still around.)
