Windows Will Not Shut Down
I can't seem to get my Windows 98 operating system to shut
down anymore. Friday night it shut down with no problems, then on Saturday night it just wants to restart when I try shutting it down. I have tried repeatedly to shut it down, but it will only shut down if I do it manually and not by selecting the appropriate button. Does anyone out there have a solution for me. I will really hate having to manually shut it down each night. Also, it is not good for the system either. Thanks, Kemm |

Click StartRun, type MSCONFIG and click OK.
On the General tab, click the Advanced button. Click to put a check mark in the box for "Disable fast shutdown", and click OK. Click OK to close Msconfig, and restart the computer. If that does not help, or if the box was already checked or wasn't there, go he Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter: http://aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Kemm" wrote in message ... I tried your suggestion and that did not solve my problem.
I also looked at the website that you posted and I can't really see that any of that applies to this situation. I have not a clue as to why it just restarts everytime I click on the shutdown button. It does not make any sense that it can go from being normal one day, to all screwed up the next. If you or anyone else has another solution for me I sure would like to hear about it. Like I said before, I really don't like using the power button to have to shut it down, but that is my only choice right now. The Shutdown Troubleshooter web site has quite a large number of procedures to use,
to help determine what may be the issue. If you do not try them, there is little I can do to help diagnose the trouble. How can you tell that nothing applies without going through the procedures? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Kemm" wrote in message ... I read through everyone of them and not one of them
addresses the problem of when you go to shut down the system that it will restart instead of shutting down. It mainly talks about shutdown "hanging". I don't have a problem with it hanging and not going into shutdown. It does not hang at all. It just automatically restarts. Not sure why you are assuming that, because one of the common symptoms of enabling
"Fast Shutdown" in msconfig is that the computer will restart when you try to shut down. The web pages deal with shutdown troubles, whether it be hanging, restarting, fatal exceptions, or whatever. If you have Win98 SE, also click the link on the left frame of the web page, that says: Windows 98 SE Start here for SE -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Kemm" wrote in message ...
