Can't open archived .jpg's and bmp's
I hope someone here can help me or point me to the right NG.
Some time ago I archived, using Winzip v8.0, some .jpg and .bmp files. Now when I try to open them I get error messages. They are as follows: trying to open a .jpg file I get an error in Microsoft Photo Editor that it "Can't determine type." And with a .bmp file I get a Paint message "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\filename.bmp Paint cannot read this file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported." Any help will be appreciated. BTW, out of 93 files three are readable. ..jpgs that Microsoft Photo Editor can open. Puzzled, Dan Hacker Running W98SE on an IBM PC300PL with 128MB ram. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- |

Have a look at the file headers with a hex editor. You can do this from a DOS prompt as follows: edit /r /64 filename.ext A JPEG file will have a "JFIF" text string at bytes 7 through 11, and a BMP will have a "BM" as the first two bytes. A BMP file will also have regular blocks of data whereas a JPEG will not. This is because the former is uncompressed. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

Did you extract them to their own folder and *then* try to open them, or are
you trying to open them directly from within WinZip (which is what usually results in them opening from the TEMP folder)? Also, where have you been storing the ZIP file? Try using IrfanView to open them, after fully extracting them from the archive. www.irfanview.com -- Gary S. Thanks for the reply.
The unreadable files do NOT have the JFIF in the file. The readable ones have it. The .bmp file does NOT have the BM in the file. I tried viewing them both ways. First I unzipped them all to a removable
drive (i:\ Memorex Travel Drive 512MB), and then I tried to view them directly from the archive. I also tried Irfanview but got the error message: "I:\My Documents\My Pictures\filename.jpg : Can't read file header! Unknown file format!" If Frank Zabkar has me pointed in the right direction, there appears to be some corruption in the files, particularly in the file header. Any suggestions on recovering all/part of the files?

The original medium was a 5.4GB hard drive partitioned to a 743MB 16FAT
logical drive (a left over from a W95 system). The drive is probably 9 years old, and originally formatted under W95. When I upgraded to a W98 machine, I just slaved the old drive. put finger to keyboard and composed: Any suggestions on recovering all/part of the files? Disappointed, Dan I don't think I can help you with your file recovery, but I'm wondering whether the images were corrupted before archiving or afterward. If Winzip didn't complain when extracting them, I would think that the files would have been corrupt beforehand. AFAIK Winzip should be able to confirm the integrity or otherwise of files in its archive by using their saved CRC values. Just as an experiment I created a text file consisting of the phrase "This is a test". I then ZIPped it without compression. Its CRC was C6C3C95D. I next used a hex editor (on the ZIP file) to change "test" to "text". When I then attempted to extract the test file from the archive, Winzip errored out with "bad CRC ca9626bc (should be c6c3c95d)". The test file was NOT extracted, not even in its corrupted form. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |
