Blank Dialog Boxes
It's the same for Windows 98 and 98SE.
OK, let's walk you through the steps. First of all, let's find out if your Windows installation files are on your hard drive or if we'll need to look on the installation CD. What kind of machine do you have? Brand name and model, if you can. What does your Windows 98SE installation CD look like? If the files are already on your system, they'll probably be in the C:\Windows\OPTIONS\Cabs folder. To look in that folder, you can copy that path (starting with C:\ and ending with Cabs) and then Paste it into your StartRun box, then click OK. If there are several dozen CAB files in that folder, then you won't need your installation CD. If there are only a few files in that folder, then use FindFiles & Folders to search for WIN98*.CAB. (WIN98, asterisk, dot, CAB) If you find lots of them, then write down what folder they're in. If the CAB files aren't on the hard drive, then they're in the \WIN98\ folder on the installation CD. If yours isn't a standard installation CD, then I'll have to send you a copy of the file. (I could do that, anyway, but it's better if you take this opportunity to learn some new tricks, smile.) The CAB file you want for Windows 98SE is Win98_52.cab. If it's on a CD, copy that file to your Desktop. Now, wherever it is, open the CAB file by double-clicking it. Then locate the MARLETT.TTF file and drag it to your Desktop. Then close the CAB file. Now, follow these steps: 1. At the StartRun box, type in COMMAND, then press Enter. You should see a command prompt like this: C:\WINDOWS\Desktop 2. Run the following commands, making sure to include all the punctuation and spaces that I include, pressing Enter at the end of each line. (Make sure the slants lean the right way. One is a forward-slant, not a back-slant.): attrib -s -h c:\windows\fonts\marlett.ttf copy marlett.ttf c:\windows\fonts /y attrib +s +h c:\windows\fonts\marlett.ttf exit 3. Restart your system. Delete the Marlett.ttf file from your Desktop and also the CAB file that you copied there, if you did that. All done. If you have a difficult time figuring out where the spaces are in the above commands, copy the message from the Microsoft page where you're reading it and then Paste it into a new Notepad file. That will let you use the cursor to find the spaces. PLEASE let us know how it went, OK? -- Gary S. Another route to the same goal is to put your Windows98 CD into the CD drive and / START / RUN / SFC.EXE which is the System File Checker. You can select it (via checkbox) to EXTRACT ONE FILE FROM INSTALLATION DISK and type in the checkbox MARLETT This will work on two conditions 1. The display is currently good enough to see what you are doing. It seems your Marlett font file has been mangled and this is a component of Windows' screen writing. 2. When the Operating System was first installed SFC made a list of essential System Files and where they came from. It can therefore be used to Restore files on this list to the way they were. Unfortunately SFC does not update itself when you run upgrades or corrective patches. but this ought not to affect the Marlett fonnt file. When done, reboot, and post the results here. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Hi,
I want to thank all of you for the advice. It still sounds very confusing. I'm going to try to find someone to help me so it may be a while till you hear back from me. My computer is an emachine 600 I X and is getting old. This is the first time in 6 years that I had problems with it. I have a restore CD (Bootable CD) Ver 2.1 (whatever that means!) Today is my birthday so I'm going to celebrate! Thanks again, Elizabeth "Don Phillipson" wrote: "Elizabeth" wrote in message ...
