No "Safely Remove Hardware" Icon

... I installed Maximum-Decim "Native USB Driver for Win98SE and now hotplug.dll ( version 4.10.2224) and systray.exe (version 4.10.2224) are in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS folders. I haven't installed the Maxim-Decim - only the driver that came with my drive (and possibly older ones too). I have the same versions of those two files - on the PC which ... No icon in the system tray and I continue to get the nag screen when I pull the flash drive. .... does that. (I haven't yet cheched to see whether I have them at all on the PC which does have the icon and, _usually_, doesn't nag when used properly. Sometimes, when I use the icon [on that PC obviously], it says the drive is in use and to wait a bit and try again: approximately always, if I've had that warning, I know I'll always get it, however long I wait.) [] "glee" wrote in message ... I believe the only way you will see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Win98SE is if you either already have the Update for 1394 Storage Peripherals installed: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=242975 or your device's installer includes that update in its routine, [] Among the files the update adds to Win98SE are Hotplug.dll and an update Systray.exe, which allow that icon to appear. Can you check your systems, both the ones that do and the ones that do not exhibit the icon, and see if the update's files are on the system? I'll try to remember to check on the other machine (the one that does have the icon, which sometimes works). I haven't ever seen the icon display in Win98SE unless one of those conditions were met, and they all depend on that 'firewire" update. [] (Unfortunately, the converse isn't true - having the files doesn't necessarily make the icon appear.) |

Glee,
The only driver I can find is USBUI.DLL which is in the C:\WINDOWS\System folder. I don't think that I ever installed a driver for this PINE Excalibur USB 2.0 256 Flash Drive. Should I uninstall or rename USBUI.DLL and if so how? Art "J. P. Gilliver" wrote in message ... "Art Beck" wrote in message ... No, that's not what I meant....don't look for some file on the system. If it is a
USB flash drive and you are using it with Win98SE, you had to have installed a driver package from the manufacturer. Flash drives simply do not work natively on Win98SE without installing some driver package. I meant to look in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs to find the driver package that was installed. If the flash drive is currently working and you cannot find the entry in A/RP, I would let it alone unless you are just trying to break the current functionality. ;-) -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Art Beck" wrote in message ...
