No "Safely Remove Hardware" Icon

I am successfully using a flash drive but do not have the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray. Where do I find it?

The driver for his drive may have introduced one; most pen drives I've used
under '98 do have one (usually a green arrow in the tray).

Probably reinstalling the driver (might have to remove it first) will
recreate it. Alternatively, if following Ron's advice above doesn't give any
problems, just stick with that.

I've sometimes thought I might be having some success by right-clicking on
the drive in Explorer and selecting Eject, but find it hard to pin down.

Ron: sometimes, on removing a drive, I get a very nannyish BSOD that says
something like "some files on the drive were open, and data may have been
lost. Make sure this is not the case in future. Press any key to continue.",
even if I wait until all activity has apparently stopped (on one PC I have
the icon Art is after, on the other I don't - same drive, same driver; just
one of those things ...). I don't think I _have_ ever experienced any
evidence of damage to data after one of these; certainly, when I press the
any key, the desktop comes back as normal, replacing the BSOD.

Yes I am unable to find it. How do I respond to this nag screen which
appears every time I unplug the USB Flash Drive?

You have unplugged or ejected a device without stopping it which
can cause your computer to crash and lose valuable data.

Please use the hotplug icon in the status bar to safely stop devices
before unplugging them.

I delayed for 60 sec prior to removal and still got the nag screen.

I believe the only way you will see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Win98SE is
if you either already have the Update for 1394 Storage Peripherals installed:

or your device's installer includes that update in its routine,

or if you have installed the Maximum-Decim "Native USB Driver for Win98SE, which
also includes that update:

Among the files the update adds to Win98SE are Hotplug.dll and an update
Systray.exe, which allow that icon to appear.

Can you check your systems, both the ones that do and the ones that do not exhibit
the icon, and see if the update's files are on the system?

I will look to see if I have hotplug.dll, and what version of systray.exe I
have (I assume you meant "updated" not "update", as I think systray.exe is
part of Windows anyway; I'll see if mine's greater than V2222.)

I installed Maximum-Decim "Native USB Driver for Win98SE and now hotplug.dll ( version 4.10.2224) and systray.exe (version 4.10.2224) are in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS folders.

No icon in the system tray and I continue to get the nag screen when I pull the flash drive.

BUT, did you first uninstall the other driver you had installed for the drive
earlier? If the manufacturer's driver is installed, the Maximum-Decim driver will
not be used.
