Default Recovery disc re-instal: can't get past W98 logon (repost)

"some factor inhibiting its effective use in normal mode" is just a fancy
way of saying it doesn't work. You cannot assume that a working keyboard
and mouse in safe mode means that USB is working properly in normal mode.
Otherwise, your suggestion that perhaps the drivers are corrupted would be
illogical, when in fact it (or something similar, like failing to load
properly) is exactly the conclusion I was proposing.

Jeff -
THE KEYBOARD AND MOUSE BOTH WORK IN SAFE MODE!!!
therefore the USB works - but there is some factor inhibiting its
effective use in normal mode.
Please read what the poster has written, rather than attempting to support
incorrect assumptions

You have two assumptions - USB is getting detected properly, and USB
drivers are loading properly.

No it won't - USB is detected and drivers are loaded in the default
configuration, and as such are not dependent on the Legacy settings -
besides which he's uninstalled/reinstalled the mouse and keyboard in
this configuration.

Default Recovery disc re-instal: can't get past W98 logon (repost)

Thanks guys. As I understand it you want me to find updated mouse & keybd
drivers or just USB drivers? I gather these are the ones called HID! And
should I look at MS site for these or the manufacturer? I've checked Gateway
and they don't seem to support Neo PC's anymore. I have a disk for the mouse,
but the problem was occurring before I loaded its software. If I do the
recovery instal again, is there another way I could proceed?
Tks again.

The keyboard and mouse drivers might be called HID. However, the track I
was following was that your problem is with USB rather than the actual mouse
drivers. Do you know that USB is working on that machine under Windows?
What is the current setting for legacy support of mouse and keyboard? Does
the problem change if you change that setting? Do you have a standard
keyboard and connector you can use for testing?

It's quite possible that the problem is nothing to do with USB or drivers,
and is associated with something entirely different that loads or executes
in normal mode at the time that the dialogue appears.

At the moment I have XP Home temporarily installed to enable my neighbour to use the PC. It's not an option to continue with this (cost, insufficient RAM, etc). Everything functions perfectly with XP, if rather slowly. The PC only has USB so I cannot use any other keyboard. Is it possible to 'go back' within XP to W98 and instal that way?

Tks.
