There is not a tutorial for installing devices because each manufacturer decides what method to use for their device and drivers. Therefore, you need to read the instructions that came with the device. Unfortunately, this NOS item came without a CD. Fortunately I found a tiny little tutorial on the device on the internet, as well as a HUGE one on Win98 in general. I put them both on my desktop machine, so it was right there handy while I was working on the laptop. The big one is organized in a way that makes it easily searchable. The little one gave me the name of a key file that didn't seem to be in the w98 procedures. The big one has step by step instructions on every aspect of installing networking. Win98 did not ship with any drivers for combo cards so you need to look to the manufacturer of this card for both the drivers and installation instructions. For several days I've had a CD I made up from a file downloaded from Intel. Unfortunately w98 refused to accept most of what was on it. As for network protocols, remove all protocols except for TCP/IP since this is the only one that you will use on the Internet. You don't need any other network protocol unless you are connecting to a local network Internet is secondary; a file sharing LAN was the first thing in the agenda. address and you may need to enter the DNS servers as well. Again, this is specific to your ISP so we can't give you the details. My ISP uses the 0.0.0.0 thing, assigning DNS on the fly. I learned about installing that in the big W98 tutorial. Each computer can only have one name and each computer on the network must have a different name. Getting an error popup saying I had used the same name twice was one of the obstacles. Doing yet another complete hardware/software removal eliomionated that one. I must have done such removals 7 or 8 times. I finally stuimbled across a key point in getting this thing installed. Although w98 did have _some_ of the necessary drivers, over half had to be imported. Those, as I said, were rejected by the system. But at one point I hit the wrong key during the process and discovered how to tell it to stick it up its nose when it demanded the Win98 CD. At that point it started telling me which files it was looking for. Somehow a key file was missing. It wasn't on the system anywhere, nor on the W98 CD nor on the Xircom CD. I finally located it on the internet (at a 3rd party site), downloaded it and did another total removal of all networking hardware and software. After that both the LAN and the modem installed fine. Thanks for your help. Jim L -- Unknown error. Please correct and try again. |
