File types - I want wordpad
I wonder if someone in here might help me; generally I don't like to
muck about in the registry, but I will if I have to. I tried in microsoft.public.word.newusers - but the MVPs who answered there could only suggest workarounds or the opinion that Word's misconfiguration of the registry should be acceptable to me. This is that thread http://snipurl.com/9jxr snurled googleup 7 items starts here From: "Mike Easter" Subject: File types - I want wordpad Date: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 12:49:07 -0700 Newsgroups: microsoft.public.word.newusers Message-ID: Here's a recapitulation of parts of my questions in that thread. I want winword .doc files to open in wordpad, not winword. However, when I try to open a winword.doc, it doesn't open in wordpad, it doesn't open at all, but winword loads. In My Computer/ View/ Folder options/ File types/ Microsoft Word Document it sez Opens with wordpad In that same Filetypes section, I've changed everything in Edit to say wordpad, new, edit, print and they all say "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE" with the quotes except one of them sez C:\PROGRA~1\ACCESS~1\WORDPAD.EXE "%1" wordpad is in C:\Program Files\Accessories\Wordpad.exe And... When I shift click a winword doc and say 'open with' - if I leave 'always use this program to open this file' *unchecked* and select wordpad then it /will/ open in wordpad. If I *check* always use this program and select wordpad, the file /doesn't/ open, wordpad doesn't open, but winword loads just as I described at the top if I simply doubleclick the ..doc. Win98se, Word 2002. That was my first post, later I installed Open Expert to help me beat back or avoid Word's invasion of my filetypes management by providing me with an alternate R click context menu. The MS MVPs who responded were Graham Mayor who acknowledged that Word was invasive like that, and Suzanne Barnhill who seemed to feel that everyone should want Word to open if they click on a .doc, regardless of their own wishes. Personally, I think I would rather fix whatever is wrong in the registry than have to work around what is a bad configuration created by Word. -- Mike Easter | http://www.verifiedvoting.org Voter-Verified Paper Trail for 2004 Elections |

... I want winword .doc files to open in wordpad, not winword. Before they are opened, your PC does not know a DOC file was made by Word. All it knows is that the file has a DOC extension. 1. Select (highlight) a DOC icon. 2. Shift + Right Click. Select from the menu Open With . . . 3a. If WORDPAD is listed in the box, select it. 3b. If WORDPAD is not listed, / Browse to it and select it. 4. Uncheck the box Always use this app with this filetype. 5. Click OK. This opens your selected DOC in WORDPAD. If successful repeat the process and this time 5. Uncheck the box Always use this app with this filetype. Your problem is general, e.g. most of us have more than two graphic viewers or music players, and most of these want to become the default for all files of the appropriate type. But just because XYZ can read files of type NN1 does not mean we always want to load XYZ. The method given here lets us both assign DOC filetypes to WORDPAD and load WORD whenever we feel like it. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Have you tried saving the file as an .rtf or .txt to see if it works?

@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl: Personally, I think I would rather fix whatever is wrong in the registry than have to work around what is a bad configuration created by Word. I have Word 2000 installed, and before I had Office 97. I looked in the registry, and found that the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc key has the subfolders ShellEx Wordpad.Document.1 Word.Document.6 Word.Document.8 WordDocument all containing more junk, while for instance the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.drw key (from Micrografix Draw) only has a default value. I suggest that you rename HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\._doc and open a .doc file. Windows should ask what you want to use to open this, and create a new, clean .doc entry. |
