Win95 upgrade to Win98

Hi, I would like to upgrade a old PC from win95 to win98 in our company, but
I've several question and hope someone can help:

1. do win98 install CD have upgrade function that can upgrade from win95 to
win98 ?

2. if yes, so I upgraded from win95 to win98, wil the data stored in win95
can be kept in win98 ?

3. Do I need to install drivers again ?

A Win98 *upgrade* cd can directly upgrade win95 to win98.

The full version of win98 can also upgrade a win95 machine but it will have
to be "tricked"
into doing so.


First off, you will need to rename the win.com file
(rename it to win.old for example)

Now begin a win98 installation but pay careful attention.
You will be prompted to where you want to install Windows...
and since you have Win95 on the machine, you will be asked if you want to
install Windows in the C:\Window.000 folder.


At that point do not take the default option, but instead select your
original Windows folder which is more than likely simply C:\Windows


Now, Win95 should be upgraded to Win98.

All your drivers , settings and data should be OK...
but as a precaution you should back up your important data first!

I would highly suggest upgrading to Windows 98 Second Edition because of
better USB support including some USB 2 support and better software support.
Many programs will require 98 SE as a bare minimum. Please keep in mind that
you will need to have the latest version of Internet Explorer 6 service pack
1 installed before Windows Update will work. Please post all your questions
here and I and others will let you know how to best go about this process.
Finally, like philo said make sure you have a back-up of your system and make
sure you have copies of any critical business files either on a 3.5 floppy
disk or burned to a cd or preserved in another method. Although, 98 SE is
not used by the general public very much any more it was in my opinion the
best that the 9x source code was able to provide being supported by Microsoft
until July 11, 2006. It was still very popular at that point but no company
can provide support for an operating system forever and I think Microsoft did
a great job supporting 98 Second Edition users. Heck, I still use 98 Second
Edition in Fat32 on my current machine that has XP Professional as my now
more widely used operating system. I like the security of Vista for

thanks all, so I plan to upgrade to Win98 SE, but I have problem that the
old PC model is IBM PC 300GL, and it does not have CD-ROM, so I need to copy
Win98 SE Source CD to D:\Win98SE through network ( C drive installed
Win95 ), then start the upgrade process.

if i start the upgrade, all i need is to logon Win95, then go to D:\Win98SE,
then click the install win98se ? it that ok ? thanks.

install a cd drive for the computer even if it is an old computer. The above
website has the IBM PC 300GL but you need the number for me to research your
situation further. In addition, have you made any changes or modifications
to the hardware that I should be aware of. Thank you for providing the

thanks, it is IBM 300GL 6275, the cd-rom drive has been removed in our PC

it there any problem if i install Win98 SE from D drive ?

To answer both:

Yes, use another installation folder which you can transfer files into over
the network to the 95 box. You will need the the win98 directory.

Make sure to FIRST download the drivers for the specific sub-model for
Win98SE:

SE use PRIOR to upgrading.

folder}\Options\CABS and transfer the contents of that Win98 directory to
it.

Copy the Win98 folder and sub-folders from the CD to wherever you like on the IBM
computer, over the network. If you have a D: partition on the IBM computer, just
copy the entire Win98 folder from the CD to there. Make sure you have the computer
set to "show all files" before you copy:

In Win98, click Start Settings Folder Options View tab, and click to enable "Show
All Files" and click OK.
It is slightly different in Win95, but you will find the option to show hidden files
by opening a folder window and clicking the View menu Folder Options View tab, as
