Office 97 help requested

Using a Compact deskpro, I am having a problem with the Excel program that is
on my Office 97. Every other program in the Office 97 works great except
Excel. It has been working great and now when I try to open it I get a
message that says “This program has performed an illegal operation and will
shut down�. I did put the Office 97 disk in and choose the option of
“reinstall files�. That did not work – I still get the same message. All help
with this problem appreciated. Thanks.

I dont have an answer for you, I dont think it is a Win98 problem though.
I checked the server list for NewsGroups and there are at least
10 relating to Excel on this server, one of which is titled Crashes, give
one
of those a try. Apart from that, someone else here may know what is
going on and you might get a reply from them.

You will get better help with an Office or Excel problem by asking in an Office or
Excel forum or group, preferably for the version of Office/Excel you have installed.

When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and
post to the relevant forum with the exact details word for word, up to but not
including the memory registers.

this software.

he should document if possible what changes were
made to the OS that may have caused Excel to
malfunction. Office97 was no doubt patched or upgraded
before WinXP appeared: and it is possible that Win98
security patches have altered some DLL that Office uses.
(I periodically have difficulties using WPWin v.8 patched
to approx. year 2000 (and no later since WPWin now is
up to at least version 12) under Win98SE patched to 2003
-- but they are tolerable, i.e. not worth pursuing. . . )

remove the entire office suite and re-install ...(had same sort of problem)

now running Office97 on win98/XP with no problems (except a spellcheck fix)

Indeed... several IE/OE updates (and others) have altered system files used
by Office 97..

You may be able to check for the problem with "Dependency Walker" or
another "debug" program, or an application monitoring program.
You WILL find that several files from IE6/OE are causing errors and illegal
function calls.
{Hmm, didn't Excel produce an error log,,, don't remember)

The work arounds may or may not work [files and registry].. so as suggested
elsewhere, an uninstall and re-install may be the best solution.
I have to qualify that though; as your other office programs appear OK,
then Excel may have been affected by the last several month's updates from
Microsoft [direct draw, activeX, directX, shwapi.dll, ole...dll,
shdocvw.dll, cdfview.dll, etc.], but I can't help you with those, as I no
longer have Excel installed locally, and service none using Excel from
Office97. You might find an indication of a like problem found in the newer
versions on Microsoft.

Win98SE installation, as IE6 (and hence Explorer/system) has control of
several files which Office 97 needs to downgrade/install during the

After you have it re-installed:

Burn a backup/image to cdrom.

Save copies of your installation logs [Windows Update.log, iuhist.xml]...
Burn all updates and files to cdrom.

You really should try running, updating, reinstalling Office 97 on a fully updated
Win98 system with IE6 SP1....it works just fine, with none of the issues you
suggest.

news:microsoft.public.excel will do just fine for Excel questions regarding any
version of Excel. Similarly, there are numerous Office groups available
(microsoft.public.office.*) where questions about any version of Office can be asked
and answered.

Surely, but what would be helpful, as I stated, is to post the details of the error
message, here or more preferably in the Excel group. Lots of things are possible,
but the actual error message may narrow it down considerably.
