Make a "ding" sound on regular basis
Hi, Win 98 SE.
One of our store managers wants to have his 98 machine make a "ding" sound every 30 minutes to remind himself to go check on the restaurant. Strange, yes, I know. How can I set this up? Thanks |

A really great PIM manager is "Click Tray Calendar"
it's free, it's here http://www.waseo.de/en/Products/Free...licktray1.html Repeating alarms can be optioned, see following advice. With the functions of this window, alarm times and messages for a certain day can be entered, deleted or changed. The alarm function can now even start and stop programs. After it was started, it will appear and look like this: In the left upper corner is the alarm list which contains the alarm times with the associated texts. If a line will be clicked, it appears in the input line below. Right beside is the display of the valid date of the alarms in the list and below this, there is the month calendar field which will show the days with alarms (here red). The days can be clicked, so it is easily possible to change to another date. If a day with alarms is clicked, they will be loaded automatically in the list and shown. Clicking the button lets the month display move back a month, the button a month forward and the button will switch back the date to the current one. All colours of the month field will be the same like used for the one at The Calendar Window. Below that are three tab sheets which can be activated by clicking their names at their top: 1. Data input 2. Repetitions 3. Annual Repetitions 1. Data input: Below that are two tab sheets which can be activated by clicking their names at their top: Data input and Repetitions. At the left of the Data input tab sheet is the alarm time field at the left. There the time for an alarm can be adjusted. At its right is the text input line, that is the place a text for the alarm time can be entered. For getting it into the list, either the return key or the button can be used. If the time already exists in the list, just the text of it will be exchanged by the new text (so it is easily possible to modify an alarm text). The alarm type can be changed by using the alarm type section right beside the input line. Usually, it is set to Message and the entry will appear with an information symbol in the alarm list. For entering a program to be started at the defined time, switch it to Program start and enter the complete path plus parameters (to find the path, the button can be used also). The new entry will get a program symbol in the alarm list. In case the program cannot be found later, an error message will appear. For stopping a program, switch the alarm type section to Program stop and enter the complete program title (the one appearing in the title caption at the top of its window) or just a part of it as long as it can be indentified this way. Note if the application sends a dialog before it closes, e. g. "Are you sure?", the window will not close automatically. A program to be stopped will get a program stop symbol in the alarm list. Deleting an alarm can be done by pushing the button , however, it has to be selected before, and the button will restore all data before last time saving in case a repetition or some modification was performed which should be not be done this way (of couse, there will be a question dialog before the restoration starts). Also it is possible to print the alarm list, either directly by pressing the button or by starting a print preview by the button which e. g. looks like this: 2a) Alarm repetition: The second tab sheet presents the repetition possibilities. It looks like this: Repeating alarms is very easy, just follow these steps: 1. Make sure you clicked the line in the alarm list with the alarm to be repeated. Click the button Next. 2. Then the start date should be entered in section Repeat from and then the end date in Repeat until to specify the time span. Clicking the button lets the month display move back a month, the button moves forward a month. To fix a certain day, just click the day number in the calendar month field. Click the button Next. 3. Then there are several tab sheets in the middle which can be clicked to be activated and used to define the repetition type: 1. Daily: The alarm will be repeated for every day of the time span. The interval can be entered additionally, e. g. 2 would mean only each second day would get the alarm entry. 2. Weekly: The alarm will be repeated for every week of the time span on a certain week day which can be selected at the combo box. Similar to the daily repetition, a week interval can be set. 3. Monthly: The alarm will be repeated for every month of the time span on a certain day number, to be selected at the combo box. If the repetition should be on every last day of the month, select the "End of the month" entry in combo box. 4. Every: This special repetition option can be used to let the alarm be repeated by a special interval, e. g. every 2. Tuesday of the month. The interval number and the week day can be selected at the combo boxes. 5. Days ahead: The alarm will be repeated after a certain amount of days after the start date which can be entered at the day number box. The date will be calculated automatically by the program. Click the button Next. After clicking the button , a question dialog will appear which asks if the repetition should be really peformed, and by pushing Yes, it will be done, by No nothing will happen. Attention: There is just one alarm time which can be repeated, not multiple ones at the same time. 2b) Deleting a repeated alarm: To delete an existing repeated alarm, the process is almost the same like explained at 2a), which means: 1. Click the line in the alarm list which repesents the alarm which should be deleted. 2. Specify the time span. 3. After all parameters are specified, press the button . The program will now search all days involved with the repetition for the alam time automatically and will delete it. 3. Annual alarm repetitions: For adding annual repetitions, the process is the same as explained at 2a), but additionally the little checkbox at the bottom has to be clicked for getting the checked status. After pressing the button , the programm will add the entry to the annual repetition list and show the third tab sheet automatically: If an entry has to be removed, click it and then press the button . Alarm messages If an alarm is specified and the time becomes current, an alarm message will appear which can look e. g. like this: The number box below the message provides the possibility to repeat this alarm later. Just enter a number and that number of minutes later, the same alarm message will appear again. If no repetition is wanted, just let the number be 0. Pushing the button will save all entries in the alarm list to the year file and closes the window again. Days with alarms will get an apostroph in the month field of the calendar window and can be easily recognized this way. Use Task Scheduler. Make the command:
C:\WINDOWS\sndrec32.exe /play /close C:\Windows\Media\Ding.wav (There's three spaces in that commend.) Use Advanced settings to have it run every day at whatever starting time you want, every 30 minutes, for 23 hours and 59 minutes. Make sure Task Scheduler is enabled as a startup item (check MSCONFIG startup tab.) (Note that SNDREC32 resides in the System32 folder on Windows XP and, I assume, Windows 2000.) If you have a microphone, you can also use Sound Recorder to record a custom WAV file--like "HEY! Check the restaurant!" Or, if you want, it's easy to write a script that not only plays the sound, it also put up a message box. Let me know if you want one (email me at ) what you want it to say, and if you think perhaps a different sound would work better. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "JC" wrote in message ... Thanks, I'll check this for sure.
BTW, do you know if that program loads any *tack-on* programs which are considered adware/spyware/malware? I see this all too often. Hi Gary,
I was pretty sure this could be done with the Task Scheduler. I have been playing with it for a couple of hours to see if I can get something to work. I will definitely try the command you posted. I'm VERY interested in that script you mentioned! I will send an off-line message shortly. Thanks for the offer! -----Original Message----- Use Task Scheduler. Yeah, I note that the Task Scheduler method isn't pretty--it takes a few beats
to crank up SNDREC32. I also haven't found a list of switches for the app, particularly the one that makes it "quiet"--so that you don't see the Sound Recorder panel. -- Gary S.
