Mart,

Try Adobe Reader 8 and comment afterwards please.

Version 7 is, no doubt at all, a system hog and a piece of you know what (no
contest as you say).

Keep in mind I am not and have no intentions of passing onwards a bad
opinion of Foxit Reader!

A quick comment:

Adobe Reader 8 is much lighter and seems to be better integrated in
Windows, IE and FF than previous versions.

IMHO you should give it a try (it runs only on WinXP).

Hi Zee,

As it happened, I had actually just uninstalled AR 7.0 - between posts - and
hadn't really intended trying AR 8.0. However, in the interests of 'Good
Will on the WinMe News Groups', you understand, I succumbed to your
suggestion to try AR 8.0.

Bearing in mind that I've literally just installed it and given it only a
very brief 'test', I have to say I'm certainly impressed with which the
speed of opening has VASTLY improved - probably as fast as FoxiT. That in
itself has to be worth the upgrade - if nothing else. (I'll try to get my
head around the 'new interface' tomorrow)

I was pleased to see (hear!) that the 'Read Out Loud' feature has been
retained - which will now probably 'twist my arm' into keeping a copy of AR
on my PC.

However, (there had to be a 'however), the footprint is still large - some
121 Mb. BTW- the previous footprint of 130 Mb did also include the Chinese
alphabet characters plug-in. So I don't really know if it's THAT much
'smaller'

Jury's out, but the much needed and overdue 'rapid startup' should make
other disillusioned users think twice before dumping it.

Thanks Zee, for pushing me into installing and trying it, though.

Paranoia?
In spite of the new 'secure' AR 8.0, I wonder does FoxiT suffer the v7.0 and
less security shortcomings.

AR (in general) doesn't have an awful lot going for it I suppose g

Mart,

Foxit has no vulnerabilities reported at Secunia:

http://secunia.com/vendor/1850/

I believe this is one of those "popularity" issues, more popular programs
have higher probabilities of being hit by hackers, malware designers, etc.

See IE vs. FF, Linux vs. Windows, etc. etc. etc.

Perhaps Mike M has some fresh ideas about your doubt. I can't answer it...

Zee,

I am using both, Foxit and AR at will, to suit my needs: the last free
version AR 6.0 and the latest of Foxit Reader. Also trying to avoid using
the plug-ins for AR and see no risk in either program.
In the end personal preference plays a big role.

Harry.

My verdict on AR 8.0:

I just reverted to 7.0.8. For one there are no (known) security holes if you
disable all the fluff and just use it as a basic PDF viewer, which is all
you need it for. Tell me once again - whats the benefit of displaying in the
browser?

In Edit/Preferences disable viewing in the browser, disable speculative
downloading in the background, disable adobe javascript, disable allowing
documents to open other files, etc. Disable the the part concerned with
certificates (do that in XP too actually - not because its a vulnerability
but because it is not in any way a security enhancement. Its just MS
commercialisation - http://www.jsware.net/jsware/iewacky.php3 for a pretty
good explanation).

In View/Toolbars disable searching the internet.

Otherwise, 7.0.8 had improved considerably in that ar speedup was no longer
necessary - it starts almost immediately (just takes 2 years to install in
the first place!). All it really leaves to complain about is using so much
disk space - but who is *that* pushed for disk space today? Not enough to
push the software beyond the pale anyway!

So why have I reverted from 8.0 to 7.0.8? Because 8.0 no longer provides an
option to disable checking for updates! In 7.0.8, bottom of the list in
Edit/Preferences (unless in previous versions you'd already disabled it with
ar speedup) is *Updates*, from whence one could turn updating off. Not there
anymore! Now, to retain control of your own computer you have to block it
with the firewall (maybe you can do it via the registry or some other
complex method, but I haven't looked into it and that misses the point
anyway). Of course, block it in the firewall and you have to disable the
rule to check via the software (as opposed to going to the site), which is
unnecessary in 7.0.8 - you can still manually click 'check for updates'.

So unless - like some of you - you automatically trust businesses and unlike
me are not control freaks, Adobe Reader 8.0 will do, I guess. But otherwise
sound of lav being flushed

A quick comment:

Adobe Reader 8 is much lighter and seems to be better integrated
in Windows, IE and FF than previous versions.

Ditto here Joan, only (tiny) feature I miss is the 'Real Out
