Default usb port

i am running windows 98..i recently installed a 5 port usb
card...successfully..it shows up in device manager...
i attached a scanner to the usb port after installing the
drivers for the said scanner....
the scanner is showing up in the printers folder.
whenever i try to use the scanner i get a message stating
that there is no scanner present....It also says that the
usb port may need to be activated in the BIOS...i checked
and the only ports listed are the com ports and LPT1...
HOW DO I ACTIVATE THE USB PORT FOR THE SCANNER???
Thanks
Frank

Download and install the correct Windows 98 drivers for the scanner from the
manufacturer's web site.

You may not have drivers installed for USB (COM) port,

I,m on an old IBM 300GL and I lost my internet. I
reinstalled my network device about ten times and it
showed up OK but it wouldn't work, then it kept giving
driver errors. I finally did something that sounds stupid
but it works on this machine.I removed my USB and ethernet
ports with device manager,I left the printer port
alone, then I rebooted. Windows found my ports and
installed them then found my adapter witch is supposed to
be plug and play anyway and installed it. I dont know why
this works or if it will work for you. I would try it as a
last resort, just don't remove your scanner drivers or
you'll have to put everything back again. Also keep in
mind I mostly use my machine to access this site to find
out why I can't use it for anything else!! Good luck,Bob.
