If it is really deleted, then you probably cannot use Windows but you
can recover the last good Registry (including System.ini) from a DOS
boot with the command:
scanreg /restore

If you can use Windows, then it is unlikely System.ini has been
deleted but you can easily check that. It is in your Windows folder so
is normally C:\Windows\System.ini

If you have ScanRegistry enabled, then you will have
a number of Registry backup files on your hard drive
in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP.

They will have names such as
RB000.CAB
RB001.CAB
RB002.CAB
RB003.CAB
RB004.CAB
RB005.CAB

Your SYSTEM.INI file is backed-up inside each one.

If you can run Windows, then open up the latest file
and extract the SYSTEM.INI file to your WINDOWS folder.

If you cannot run Windows, then boot to DOS with a boot floppy,
remove the boot floppy, insert a formatted blank floppy,
and copy the latest RB*.CAB file to the blank floppy.

Take the floppy to a working computer, and extract SYSTEM.INI
to the floppy. Then take the floppy back to the problem machine,
copy SYSTEM.INI to the Windows folder, and then reboot.

Chris,

As suggested by others you can restore the file from the registry
backups. If you can't get into Windows you can restore just that one
file from Dos. Another way to do this is to boot with a Win98
Startup Diskette then:

Enter DIR c:\windows\sysbckup\*.cab
That will list the CAB file backups, note the name of the file with
the date you want to restore the file from. System.ini and other
files are in the CAB files. Choose the most recent.

If rb000.cab is the backup you want enter this:
EXT rb000.cab

Microsoft(R) Extract Command Line Helper
----------------------------------------

You have chosen the following as your starting cab : rb000.cab
Is this okay? (y/n) : y

Please enter the path to the Windows CAB files (a :
c:\windows\sysbckup

Please enter the name(s) of the file(s) you want to extract:
system.ini

Please enter the path to extract to ("Enter" for current directory):
c:\Windows
The options you entered we
-----------------------------

Source Path : c:\windows\sysbckup
File(s) to extract : system.ini
Destination Path : c:\Windows
Is this okay? (y/n) : y

If that causes problems then from Dos enter Scanreg /restore and
restore an entire backup.
