Default DUN won't detect modem

I bought a new computer and decided to reformat my old computer's HD (a
P200 150Mhz using W98 first edition) and reinstall some of the old
software so it could be used by my grandson. Everything installed ok
except I cannot get dial up networking to detect the modem.

The modem drivers installed ok and the modem diagnostics in the control
panel works fine, but DUN refuses to detect it.

The modem is a Zoom 56k winmodem that installs as COM3. I have also
tried the same thing with a USR 56k Performance Pro modem (a "real"
modem), and an external modem (an ancient Practical Peripherals 14.4k
on COM2) with same result. Windows recognizes all of these, but DUN
does not. (DUN does recognize the external modem enough to install it
if it is not installed, but then it ignores it.)

The wierd thing is DUN used to recognize the Zoom winmodem before I
reformatted and reinstalled Windows. I thought that maybe DUN needed
upgrading, so I uninstalled the old DUN and installed the latest
version (1.4) and it still does not work.

I have also tried rebuilding the telephon.ini file (per MS KB120221)
and the checked the registry setting for the telephony providers (per
MS KB191444).

I see others have had this problem, but I have yet to find where anyone
has solved it.

My new computer is XP SP2, and it's dialup networking isn't perfect
either. I have Internet Explorer set to "always dial my default
connection", but it will not do that. I always have to connect
manually. The automatic connection does work however for Outlook and
Mozilla Firefox.

How long has dial up networking been around, and it's still buggy!

Please be more precise about DUN not being detected; precise error messages
and symptoms please.

There are no error messages. If I install the modem normally, it
appears in Control Panel / Modems, but not in the DUN "Make a new
connection" dialog. Instead, the only device available is the
"Microsoft VPN adapter". If I uninstall the VPN adapter, DUN will bring
up the "Install New Modem" dialog instead.

If I uninstall the modem first, then try to make a new connection, the
"Install New Modem" dialog pops up (as it should) and I can detect and
install the modem. But after installing, DUN still can't find the modem
- it redisplays the "install new modem" dialog.

I have since ran Windows update through a network connection, but this
did not help.

Andy,

This is more of a hardware problem, rather than an 'internet' problem per
se. I would recommend that you post to a general discussion group for
Windows 98.
