Default clx-3185 printer driver

First off, I'm cross-posting this to the group you should have included
in your original distribution:

microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion

If you could, I wonder if you could explain why you chose to only post
this to alt.windows98, given that the microsoft group has about 10 to 50
times the amount of activity.

Second, I'll give you a realistic alternative to Moto Fox's incredibly
tedious "print to PDF file and then use something else to print the PDF
to the printer" solution.

Click on this samsumg URL (re-assemble into a single line):

http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consume...multifunction/
color-laser-multifunction-printers-faxes/CLX-3185FN/XSS/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support

and take note of this "add printer" Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7
driver for your printer:

- Print Driver,(Add Printer) 30 Sep, 2011 12.06 mb

The direct link for that is:

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...180PRINTER.zip

Unpack that file. Navigate to the i386 folder and take note of the .inf
file residing there. Getting win-98 to recognize that file will be your
best bet to being able to print to that printer.

Now, at this point I have to ask how the printer is connected to your
computer. Running win-98 as a virtual machine process has complications
as far as how it can interact with attached hardware, particularly USB.

I suggest that if not already the case, that you connect the printer to
your computer via it's ethernet connection. Then in the win-98 control
panel, tell it to add a new printer, point to the network, and give it
the IP address of the printer. Hopefully win-98 will see it and then
ask for a driver, at which time you will point it to the above-mentioned
INF file.

If you can't get win-98 to see the printer via ethernet, you can try
USB, and then show it the INF file. If none of this works, then you
either don't have a proper ethernet connection to the printer, or you
don't know the printer's IP address, or the fact that win-98 is running
in a virtual machine is the problem.

I personally will never run win-98 in a virtual machine because I have
always managed to find all the drivers necessary to run win-98 natively
on the hardware of my choice.

Now, I'll give you one final option.

There *are* win-98 drivers for the Samsung CLX-3160FN printer. With any
luck, they might work for your 3185 printer.

See these links:

http://www.samsung.com/nz/consumer/p...multifunction/
CLX-3160FN/XSA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support

scan driver:

DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=CLX-3160FN&VPath=DR/200810/20081028100838906/CLX-3160_Scan.exe

print driver:

http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.co...8& CDCttType=
DR&ModelType=N&ModelName=CLX-3160FN&VPath=DR/200810/20081028100215125/CLX-3160_Print_98ME.exe

Note that I had to add a carriage return when posting those links
because of the line-length restriction I have. Re-assemble those links
into a single line before trying them.

He doesn't need to explain his reasons to you. Nobody needs to explain
their reasons to you. Besides, there's absolutely nothing wrong with
posting on alt.windows98.

Oh and guess what, genius? In your over-eagerness to cross-post to
m.p.w.g-d, you didn't bother to re-post either Leslie's or my post, so
almost nobody reading there has any context! Pretty brilliant, yeah?

Okay, okay, I'm sorry, alright? I was pretty ****ed up earlier when I did
that. Need another hit. Got some dope I can smoke?

Ohh, yeah.

Just for the record - that was not me (the real 98-guy) posting that
forged response (at 2 am EST).

But who-ever did do it forged the headers pretty well, including the
X-mailer line.

But they naturally can't forge the Message ID, which will stay the same
so long as my IP address doesn't change (which I don't believe it has).

Look you Klown.

I quoted the OP's question in its entirety in my cross-posted response,
so anyone reading it HAS THE FULL CONTEXT. It's really strange why you
either didn't see that or understand that.

And as for re-posting your friggen 10-page solution - sorry, I won't
pollute these groups by doing that.

If you're so hurt that I didn't; if I dammaged your ego by not
re-posting your "solution" - then why don't you do it yourself? That's
not my job. Be satisfied that I even alluded to the fact that you gave
a response, and encapsulated it in a concise way.

Also, you can see this Klown's test posting in alt test about 5 minutes
before he posted here.

Curious to see MotoFaux posting his diarrhea about 10 to 15 minutes
prior...

Since you ask, I have never posted to a Windows group before and this one
seemed appropriate.

and take note of this "add printer" Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7
driver for your printer:

Now, at this point I have to ask how the printer is connected to your
computer. Running win-98 as a virtual machine process has complications
as far as how it can interact with attached hardware, particularly USB.

I do everything I can with Linux. Windows 98, which I need occasionally, is
running in a VMware virtual machine on a Linux host. The Linux host is part
of my LAN. The printer is connected to a laptop in the LAN that functions
(primarily) as a print server offering 2 queues: one queue using the
CLX-3185 Linux driver and the second queue "raw"--i.e. for sending already
formatted print jobs. All the real hosts on the LAN are running Linux and
send their print jobs over the LAN to this laptop, which then prints them
via a USB link to the CLX-3185 (USB is all it has--no direct ethernet).

Printing from the W98 virtual machine has always been straightforward for
various printers. The printer driver is placed somewhere convenient on the
virtual machine and then the "New Printer" procedure is carried out. The new
printer is told where the driver is and is told to send print jobs to the
"raw" print queue. End of story.

I suggest that if not already the case, that you connect the printer to
your computer via it's ethernet connection. Then in the win-98 control
panel, tell it to add a new printer, point to the network, and give it
the IP address of the printer. Hopefully win-98 will see it and then

The Win98 I am running is genuine and came with a PC I bought about 15 (?)
years ago. VMware provides an emulated PC on which you can install the
operating systen of your choice.

Now, I'll give you one final option.

Thanks for all the info. I shall be away for a week or so and won't have
time to follow that all up in detail before I go. Will report back later.

Thank-you for your concern, but I am familiar with usenet, and with the fact
that no-one owns it, and with the principle of freedom of speech. The kind
of robust banter one meets here on occasion only makes me laugh--even if I
am the target.

98 Guy seems to think he owns
everything that anybody writes about Windows 98, including where (possibly
even when) people can do so, but he knows he's just kidding himself. In
fact, please do feel free to plonk the troll like I just did.

FYI and to finish off:

I found

www.mitsdrivers.com/pages_clx-3185-driver.html

which allegedly includes a driver for Win98. When I downloaded it it turned
out to be an exe program called "DriverDetective", which obviously has the
task of downloading the actual driver based on the operating system at hand.
When I ran this from my virtual Win98 machine I got an error--illegal
operation or somesuch. I then connected to the Internet directly from Win98
(usually I keep it away for obvious reasons) and tried to download the
"driver" from there using an ancient version of Netscape. I got some sort of
download error. I then tried to install a Win98 version of Firefox, but that
also failed. Presumably the VM Win98 is not as compatible as it might be.

Then the obvious workaround occurred to me. If I'm working on a file in the
VM, all I have to do is save it (no need to close it), switch to a Linux
workspace, reopen the file using LibreOffice and print it from there. Then I
can close the file and return to the Win98 workspace to make the corrections
I need for the errors I find proof-reading the hard copy. Problem solved.

Thanks to you and Motofox for your input.
