Default troubleshooting infected emails

My friend believes he might be sending infected Internet e-mails. My friend's
internet e-mail recipients have detected viruses being sent from him. He has
available virus protection software installed on his Windows 98 computer.
There are 2 networked office computers, about 2 years old. The computer that
is suspected to be infected is the only one connected to the Internet. Can I
have a detailed list of the steps I should take to correct this problem and
to keep the problem from recurring.

It is quite likely that your friend is not infected; this is because it has
been a long time since viruses have used an infected user's real 'reply to'
address. Put simply, viruses choose an email address at random from an
infected machine, often from an addressbook but sometimes from cached web
pages, and uses that as the 'reply to' address, leaving uninfected victims
to bear the abuse of those who don't realise that they are abusing an
innocent person.
