Default Shredder will not shred

A shredder named Shred Ultra dr, useable on Win 98 SE, goes through
the motions and declares success total, but a recovery app named "recuva"
then finds the files and restores them. Is the recovery app just too
good for any shredder,
or can someone recommend one, freeware, suitable for "98?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Recuva shreds too, why not use it?

I replied too soon. Recuva v,1.36 - doesn't show a shred function. Will
look for a newer version.

RobF:

Try Sdelete from system Internals:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb897443.aspx

"
SDelete is a command line utility that takes a number of options. In
any given use, it allows you to delete one or more files and/or
directories, or to cleanse the free space on a logical disk. SDelete
accepts wild card characters as part of the directory or file specifier."

Good thought, John but on the web site it says it requires client version of
Windows XP or higher and Server version of Windows 2003 and higher. Perhaps
the program from the website below will work but some user comments suggest
that files are still recoverable. If you really want to destroy a hard drive
then I would smash it with a hammer and run a powerful magnet over the
remains for good measure. Then someone else should not be able to recover
any data on the drive. However, for individual file destroying and then not
being able to recover them may take some work on your part to find a good
utility like that especially one for free.

Dan:

The OP wanted to shred a few FILES not an entire disk. The 1.4 version
of version of sdelete will run on Windows 98. Unfortunately the web
site version is 1.5. May be worth a try though.

Thanks,Dan. Have tried file shredder 2.0.0.2. Doesn't do the job thoroughly.
Will look at the 3000 version you mentioned.
