Boot Sequence
I have an older computer that has XP that Installed however it freezes once I
click on the desktop. I have done every test imaginable, so I got out an old HD that has windows 98 on it and that one loaded fine with no freezing. Before I make a decision that it was the other HD, I want to test the RAM; however I have to change the boot sequence to floppy drive and I cannot remember the F key to get to the book sequence since it has been years since I have used Windows 98. Anyone Remember? |

Anyone Remember? F8, or hold the control key down to get to the boot menu. To get a floppy disk to boot you go into the BIOS and change boot sequence to floppy first [usually A]. Usually the first screen when a computer is booted shows which key(s) are needed to enter the BIOS. Normally a memory test can be done from any DOS prompt, so the menu will likely provide what you need to get to the Command Prompt and run the memory test from the folder where you placed it. Make it short and easy to find, like C:\temp\{the file}.{extension} which will run the program if .exe, .bat or .com. As for the XP HD, did you run multiple AV to test it? Did this JUST occur [like with the recent updates]? -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |

Anyone Remember? Nothing to do with Win98 - it depends on who made the machine and what manufacturer made the BIOS chip. Try del, esc, and all F keys (one at a time of course). It WILL be one of those. (MAYBE Enter, but I doubt it.) -- The lonely child plays with eternity, while a gang of children plays with time. Karel Capek |

Anyone Remember? How old is the PC? Please provide the PCs Manufacturer/Make/Model to help us better help you. Manufacturer - Dell, Emachine, HP, Gateway, etc. Make - Dimension, Pavilion, etc. Model/Series - 9200C, 7125, etc. Example: Dell Dimension 9100C, HP Pavilion 7125 What's the total memory installed? Is the PC able to boot to Safe mode form the XP HD? To boot to Safe Mode start tapping the F8 key immediately after booting and until you get the startup menu. Once at the startup menu select Safe Mode in the list using the up/down arrow keys and press Enter. What "every test imaginable" have you performed and what were the results? -- Brian A.
