LiteOn DVD Writer
Hi,
My CD Writer drive recently packed up so I needed to buy another....and with DVD Writers now being available now I thought I'd upgrade......bad move. There doesn't seem to be any driver available for windows98! My drive is the SHW-160H6S-01C The person at LiteOn Support told me it used the default windows driver and there wasn't any dirver that came with the product.....he was talking windows 2000 etc. Anybody know any hacks etc to get Windows98 to recognise this DVD writer??? Thanks in advance. Darren |

You are probably out of luck since you need a W98 driver--not a computer
hack--and it would be the drive maker who would furnish the driver if it existed. This is one of the most common problems with hanging with W98--no drivers for modern hardware. It pained me to switch systems but I wanted a new computer and W98 drivers did not exist for my machine. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Darren" wrote in message ... I have a Lite-On SHW-160P6S Dual-Layer DVD-RW, and it is recognised by and works
fine with Win98SE, on my dual-boot system. Windows should detect the drive and it will appear in Device Manager just as any CD drive would. Please describe exactly what is happening in your case. Is the drive appearing in Windows Explorer / My Computer, with a drive letter? Is the drive listed in Device Manager under the CDROM category? What is its description in Device Manager when you double-click it there? -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Darren" wrote in message ... Maybe the lightscribe has something to do with it and no native compatibility with 98/98SE/ME? http://www.liteon.com/prod/getProduct.do -- Jonny |

Wish I had a lightscribe drive to check...... -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm |

... Hi, My CD Writer drive recently packed up so I needed to buy another....and with DVD Writers now being available now I thought I'd upgrade......bad move. There doesn't seem to be any driver available for windows98! [] I'm assuming this is a drive that connects to an (E)IDE cable as normal. Does it appear in Windows Explorer, as an optical drive (such as drive D: if you only have one hard drive with one partition)? Some _writing_ software needs drivers for each type of drive; Roxio (formerly Adaptec; software is Easy CD creator and Direct CD) does, and they stopped adding new drives some time ago, to the version that runs on '98. I don't know about Nero (software is Nero and InCD). [The latter software in each case lets you use CD-RWs rather like a floppy.] Burn4free (http://www.burn4free.com/), last time I downloaded it, (a) didn't seem to need separate drivers for each new model of drive (it currently says it can use dual-layer DVD burners), and (b) worked fine with '98SE. I don't know if the latest version is the same, but the website looks little changed (and includes [in the FAQ] "Burn4Free doesn't work correctly with my burner. Is my burner not being recognized by the program? Most modern burners are recognized by and are compatible with Burn4Free. A conflict with ASPI may exist. Try the following:" and some notes). I use Roxio since I've grown used to it (it came with a drive and I actually paid for some upgrade), but I think if I'd seen and got used to Burn4free first, I'd probably not have bothered - it does _almost_ as much (no packet mode, i. e. the floppy imitation, but that can be more trouble than it's worth anyway), and looks pretty easy to use. |

The same questions I asked five days ago, but the OP has not been back to his thread
to answer any of us. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Shell/User, A+ http://dts-l.org/ http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "J. P. Gilliver" wrote in message ... "Darren" wrote in message ...
