Upgrading processor on old comp to K6-2@300MHz - errors starting
I have an old computer that works just fine with the AMD K6-300MHz processor
installed in it. I acquired an AMD K6-2@300MHz processor and heatsink/fan combo and swapped the processors and fans. The computer starts and works OK in DOS but Windows 98SE attemps to start with various errors including IOS, NTKERN, KERNEL32 - varies depending on - I don't know what, but every time it just restarts the computer and tries again, and always fails. Is there something I need to do to get this processor to work in my old installation? Do I need to reinstall? Is there an update or something? I would like to take advantage of the 3DNOW! functions of the K6-2 processor in conjunction with my 3D ATI video card and thought it would be easy just to swap processors but can't get it to work at all. The system is a dual-boot between 98SE and ME. Neither Windows version will start - not even in safe mode. Ideas?.... Thanks |

Windows mostly doesn't care about the CPU that is used, and certainly not
within those core components. I would guess that the new processor is causing memory errors. Have you run memory diagnostics with the new processor installed? Also, check that you have configured the CPU cache correctly. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Jay" wrote in message ... Yes, I've done memory testing from DOS ( as Windows won't start) using a
couple of fairly reputable programs - no memory errors detected. "Jeff Richards" wrote in message ... In that case I'd look at cache. The fact that the problem occurs some way
into the startup implies cache. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Jay" wrote in message ... Yes, I've done memory testing from DOS ( as Windows won't start) using a couple of fairly reputable programs - no memory errors detected. |

Which motherboard do you have? My old M571 motherboard has issues with some AMD K6-2 CPUs if the PCI/FSB ratio is set for asynchronous (2:5) instead of synchronous (1:2) mode. - Franc Zabkar -- Please remove one 'i' from my address when replying by email. |

This board is a tekram P5T30-B4 board. I don't know if this is an issue
here but I will look into it, thanks. "Franc Zabkar" wrote in message ... I'd first test the cache memory as suggested elsewhere in this thread. I'd also experiment with more conservative FSB and multiplier settings. You could also wait for the following patched BIOS to complete beta testing: http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm I don't know whether the following applies to you but it may be worth checking: "Note that if you want to run a K6plus on a board with the Intel 430TX, 430VX, or ALi Aladdin IV(+) chipset, you may have to set "System BIOS Cacheable" in the CMOS Setup to "Disable" to get it working." In his tech notes distributed with the patch, it suggests that K6, K6-2, K6-3 chips should work on this board. "Note that if you want to run a K6plus on a board with the Intel 430TX, 430VX, or ALi Aladdin IV(+) chipset, you may have to set "System BIOS Cacheable" in the CMOS Setup to "Disable" to get it working." I shall try this and log the result. |

The only option that has worked is to completely turn off L1 cache. Of
course, this slows the machine too much to make it worthwhile. Suggestions? Is it possible the L1 cache is physically damaged? (It tested fine with DOS tools). L2 cache is definitely not a problem. |
