Win98 registration problem
Hi,
I've reinstalled Windows 98 on my computer. To complete the registration proces it is trying to dial up a phone line that is always engaged (or dead?) - 20-6533533. My usual internet connection is via a cable modem, and I am unable to get on the net. I suspect that Windows is blocking the link until it is registered. If this is the case I'm in a Catch 22 situation. My Internet provider says there is no problem with their end, and my network settings correctly autoconfigure themselves - but I get a DNS error every time I try to connect. How do I modify the dial up number that Win98 is trying to connect to ? Is this the cause of my cable modem Internet problem? |

OK. Am I infected with some sort of virus? Every time I reboot, at the botom
of the screen it says "starting up Windows for the first time". Can I assume this isn't normal ? Thanks, that got rid of that. I'm still left witht te riddle of why I can't
get on the net via my cable modem, when everything checks out OK. One thing I've noticed, and I don't know if it is normal or not, is that as the computer is booting up I see the following line :- "REM by Windows 98 network c:\windows\net start" Is that usual ? Saying that everything checks out OK is not helpful in trying to find a
solution. Describe exactly what happens when you try to use your browser and mail programs (name the programs you use), if there are any error messages post them verbatim, etc. Has this machine ever connected to the internet and if so, what changed? Have you contacted your ISP? The REM causes the system to disregard the statement and I don't believe the statement is needed for your system--see this article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=190417 -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Bonzo" wrote in message ... Win98 registration problem
Hi, I used to connect to the internet via a dial up modem. Haven't done so for a while now, as this is my "emegency" computer. I have had lengthy calls with my ISP, and we have gone through (as far as they are concerned) all the configuration options and troubleshooting. They can see my modem, and say that it is OK. If I run WINIPCFG and do a "release all", then "renew all", it appears gets the correct IP address for the server. My ISP got me to "ping" their address and it did not work. With Internet Explorer, I get the usual "can't find server or DNS error" message. With Outlook Express I get - the host pop3.casema.nl could not be found.....no, socket error 11001, error number 0x800ccc0D My ISP say that the problem is at my end and they can't help me any more than they have. I have reinstalled Win98 and also Internet Explorer 6. No change. "Ron Badour" wrote: Saying that everything checks out OK is not helpful in trying to find a solution. Win98 registration problem
Hi
This is just a thought. When you are completeing your registration, seems like there is an option to click, I prefer to manually set up my connection. Click this and put the number you want to connect to in to keep it from automatically dialing the other number. May not help, but can't see where it would hurt anything. "Bonzo" wrote in message ... Hi,
Thanks, but there is no option to change the number, I have spent many happy hours trying : ) . The only option is how to configure the dialling setup, but not the number. Click "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", double-click "Internet Options",
"Connections". Then in the "Internet Connection Wizard" box, click "Setup", then select "... set up my Internet connection manually" and click "Next". Ben "Bonzo" wrote in message ...
