Default Word 2000 produces illegal operation and shuts down

I have an IBM Pentium II of 350 Mhz with Win 98 SE and Office 2000. When I
open Word and type a line and hit enter, the "the program has performed an
illegal operation and will shut down" appears. I uninstalled and re
installed Office twice but the problem continues.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks in advance

Uninstalling/reinstalling RARELY fixes the problem.

Make sure your temp folder is clear and check for addins that may be
causing a problem. See these articles for details...

You will get better advice in some of the msnews NGs
especially for Word or Office. Mention your version of
the app when you post. Some positively require updates
or upgrades.

Thanks a lot for this advice. I read the article, run word with the /a
operator and it runs perfectly. I searched and found the startup folder but
there was nothing there.

Any other idea? Please

Check to see if you have the Acrobat 7 addin...or other addins. Check
under Tools Templates and Addins...but also under Control Panel for
Add/Remove Software. I believe Acrobat 7 is now uninstalled from
there. And you may have other addins in there causing issues.

Good luck...

You ARE accessing the MSNewsgroups. Have no idea what Don is talking
about????...nor how you are viewing this group.

The direct NG server name is: msnews.microsoft.com

Hi dian

I checked but the Templates Addins only shows the Normal.dot template

Any other ideas please? It still runs fine with the /a switch

But did you also check Control Panel/Add and Remove Software?

I believe Acrobat 7 changed its method and no longer uses a regular
template addin...but does an addin install. I don't use Acrobat, but
was told this by someone who does use it. You have to unstall the Word
addin to remove that. So check your control panel.

The bottom line here is that if the /a switch worked...SOMETHING is
causing the problem by conflicting as an addin. The problem is you've
got to find it. If you HAVE checked all these locations...I'm sorry,
but I don't know what else to tell you other than make sure you did
check everything as explained in the emails and articles.

Maybe someone else will have an idea that I've missed and will pass it
along.

Good luck!
