Default USB Drive for Win 98 SE ?

Why would you think that FAT32 would either be inappropriate or
incompatible with a drive/volume size of 8 gb?

In fact, journalling file systems (such as NTFS) are seen largely as
poor choices for flash-memory drives, because of the finite read/write
cycle lifespan of that type of memory - and the somewhat "busy" nature
of NTFS.

While there may be third party patches to get Win98 to use NTFS
I have no idea if they would work with an already patched USB
function

The claimed benefits of NTFS over FAT32 are largely ficticious or bogus.

The main goal that Microsoft had in mind for NTFS is a file-system that
was not accessible if a system was booted into a command-line (DOS-like)
operating system. Most of the other advantages of NTFS have been
replaced by advances in drive hardware (real-time bad-sector remapping).

Which is why I install OS's like XP to drives pre-formatted with FAT32
when I have the chance. Much more open, accessible, and repairable
compared to NTFS.

98 Guy:

I once came across an 8 Gig Flash drive from a different manufacturer
that WAS formatted with NTFS and was useless on Win98. It was not my
drive so I did not have a chance to "play" with it. From what I know
of the owners computer skills the chance he reformatted it to NTFS is
slim to none.

NTFS?! interesting.

But I learned the hard way, under no circumstances *EVER* reformat a
USB flash drive in FAT32 using WinXP if you're planning on trying to
use the flash drive on Win98. Instead, use Win98

Thanks, Robert. USB drive working on XP; have copied some files there as
test. Will of course keep Fat 32. What is this about reformatting, and is
there something about partitioning I should know, if, as is the case, i'm
using it only as a repository?

What is "Dire software" that you mentioned? If the HP site for this v125w
flash drive supplies software for USB. The USB is installed with software
that came with the motherboard.

Thanks, Robert. I downloaded the file. But it seems to be for '98 FE, as in
the post you quoted (from glee). i'd better not experiment with installing
it on my SE box.

Don't know who wrote this:

"For Win98FE, therefore, I recommend using a different driver, from
the Italian web
sitr wintricks.it

It is not installed beforehand like the Maximus Decim driver; rather
you point to it
when Windows first detects the inserted thumb drive, as you can see
from the
pictures on the web pages, even if you cannot read Italian.
http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98.html

Although the pages are in Italian, you can look at the screenshots on
some of the
pages to determine how the driver is installed and uninstalled:

http://www.wintricks.it/faq/usbpen98_5.html
The Download link is the "Download" button on the last page.
http://www.wintricks.it/download/wtgenusb.zip

Basically, you download the driver package (.zip file), and unzip it
to a folder
where you plan to store it on the computer. Then when you insert your
flash drive,
Windows will detect it and give you the option to find the driver.
Choose to have
it look in the folder where you unzipped the downloaded files, and it
will see the
..inf file there and install your flash drive.

You can use this same .inf file to install other flash drives and USB
mass storage,
so save the .zip file somewhere safe and store the .inf file in a
permanent location
of your choice. I use the hidden Windows\Inf\Other folder, but you
can use whatever
you like.

= = =
it might work for you.
