Upgrade to Windows 98 SE Failure
I definitely agree with your assessment of a removable drive. I haven't the
faintest idea why it is marked as such. Anyway PattyL's suggestion did work. Thanks for all your ideas and comments. Even if they didn't work directly they helped me find a solution. -- Jim Ormsbee "Ron Badour" wrote: A removable drive in this sense is a CDRom, DVD, Zip or floppy drive--your hard drive should not be marked as such even though it can be removed. I believe PattyL has got you straight on the difference between an Upgrade and Update CD. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Jim Ormsbee" wrote in message ... The laptop is a Dell Latitude CPi model PPL. I have no idea why it is marked as removable (type = Removable Disk in My Computer & Windows Explorer). It can be removed when the computer is off. The disk is an authentic Microsoft upgrade CD. I am trying to install from Windows by trying to run "setup.exe" from the CD. No programs or antivirus are running. I even tried it by rebooting into the diagnostic mode and safe mode. Nothing changed in the diagnostic mode, and it would even start in the safe mode. I am trying to upgrade a laptop with the C: drive designated as removable from Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE. The C: drive can actually be removed. It is about 4.5 Gigs with about 2.4 Gigs free. I receive the following error: ----------- Message SU0013 Setup cannot created files on your startup drive and cannot setup win98. If you have HPFS or NTFS you must create an MS-Dos boot partition. If you have LANtastic server or super Stor compression, disable it before running setup. See setup.txt on setup disk1 or the windows98 compact disc. ------------- The C: drive is FAT32. I certainly agree, but it is definitely marked as removable by Windows. I
believe I tried the same thing you suggested by attempting to install from the diagnostic mode. PattyL's suggestion to move it to the hard drive and install in the safe mode did work. Thanks for your suggestions. -- Jim Ormsbee "Borg hater" wrote: Yes, my HP notebook has a hard drive I can remove. That doesn't mean its considered "removable" in Windows. Thread with PattyL indicates you have the 98 Second Edition Updates CD. This can only be run in a Windows 98 windows environment, never dos or dos window. It will ask for a product key, which I hope you have. Should be on the CD case/sleeve. All should be with this update CD. Just turn off or disable all but systray and explorer before starting. -- Lil' Dave Beware the rule quoters, the corp mindset, the Borg Else you will be absorbed "Jim Ormsbee" wrote in message ...
