Perhaps a good place to start would be for you to say what problems you
are having including full details of any error messages. You might also
want to read the associated Knowledge Base article which describes some
changes in observed behaviour following installation of this patch.
KB896358 - "MS05-026: A vulnerability in HTML Help could allow remote code
execution" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=896358).

For example, following installation of this patch - Web applications that
use the HTML Help ActiveX control to enable cross-frame navigation will
not work correctly. The content that should appear in a different frame
appears in the frame that contains the HTML Help ActiveX control.

The only message is "unable to install...." without any other details !

Many thanks....I' ve seen the bugs created by KB896358 and is better for me
not installing it .

The "bugs" you mention are the reasons for the fix since without it it is
simple for a malicious web site to take control of your PC. Without the
patch your system is at risk, it's as simple as that.

How are you attempting to install this patch? If from the Windows Update
site rather than from a downloaded free standing file, check the file
"Windows Update.log" in your Windows folder and you should be able to find
the error code(s) generated during the installation. Knowing this will
then help in finding a solution to the problem.

The error codes a
from the Windows Update log 80072EE2
which then leads to the -2147012894 error in iuhist.xml (install failed)

KB836941 gives as reasons for seeing the 80072EE2 error as:
"CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Windows Update client did not receive a
timely response from the Windows Update Web site server. A timely response
is not generated if the Windows Update Web site server is affected by a
network-related issue."

See MS KB 836941 - "You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or an "Error
0x80072EFD" error message if you try to use the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site" (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;836941)
although this KB is directed at users running either Win2K or XP many of
the solutions suggested apply to those running Win Me.

Are you perhaps behind a firewall or using AV software (that from Symantec
is often implicated with this problem), and this is preventing the
downloading of updates? It could even be, and has been on the few times
that I've seen this error, that the Windows Update site is slow but in
such cases the problem is usually resolved on a return visit.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm pleased to read all has now worked. Just
FYI I twice got a 80072EE2 error myself when attempting to access the
Windows Update site this morning. I guess there must be some heavy
traffic which is causing this problem.

Cheers,

Hi Mike,
There seem to be a lot of error messages being seen since the release of
the June updates and a lot of people are having problems installing them.
Had a few myself but everything is now OK
