Default Sony DVD/CD drive ?

The local Best Buy store has several choices for a internal DVD/CD write drive.
HP- I'm replacing a HP CD writer, due to poor reliability, will not replace

Plextor- expensive

Incl- expensive, company unknown to me

Sony- Sony has a drive for $63, seems a reasonable price. It records DVD in plus
format only, CD in minus format.

I understand the plus DVD format means recording on one side of the DVD.

If a data/music CD is recorded in minus format, can any other CD ROM drive read it OK?

Any comments on quality of Sony DVD/CD drives?

TIA

I'm boycotting Sony. For a lower price you can get a very decent CD/DVD
RW... Instead of limiting yourself to a local shop, if it's an option, look
into AOpen if you'd like.

I don't know whether that's true. (I'm no expert on DVD recording.)

If a data/music CD is recorded in minus format, can any other CD ROM drive read it OK?

Yes. There's only one standard for CD recording (mercifully). Any CD
recorder records disks that can be read by any CD player or reader.
There are some exceptions: some older players can't read CDRs or CDRWs
just because the recordable disks have lower reflectivity than
prerecorded disks. CD-RWs are less reflective yet. But the recording
format is not a problem.

Plus or minus has nothing to do with dual sided (or dual layer either)

There is no such format (for CDs).

I have an oldish Sony CR-RW (CRX195E1), been happy with it. Won't buy
Sony blanks though.

Check at Tigerdirect. I just got a NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A for 57.00. Reads and
writes just about all formats. And that includes shipping.

I just looked at TigerDirect, that model is now $39.99 after rebate, so it sounds
like that includes shipping!

They have a Liteon model CD writer for $23.99, I could use for another machine,
anyone used Liteon?

Comment?

I've put LiteOn in quite a few PC's, they're good, in that they everything
they're supposed to do, and they seem to go on forever - which is really
good seeing as they're as cheap as chips !

My favourite brand is LG almost as cheap as LiteOn ...though I thought I
caught a comment on a web page somewhere that they're relabelled Ricoh
drives, somewhere else I read that they're really some other
brand...."Silver" was it !?

I've noticed several times that the LG's are quieter than the LiteOn's when
spinning full speed.

regards, Richard

Tigerdirect sent me an email yesterday. Offers on accessories, one of which
is 20 8x TEON DVD+Rs in a cake box for 14.99 with a 14.99 rebate. Free is
good.

Are we getting to far OT?
