Updates
I need assistance please with windows me updates please
Windows update is saying I require KB833989, KB873374 & KB889293 which I have downloaded and saved to hard disc. When I go to install them, I get the message "This update requires IE6.0SP1 to be installed". Microsoft reports my IE is version 6.0.2800.1106, and it says I have update versions SP1 plus many others installed. I have checked the Belarc Advisor program as suggested in this group to other people. It indicated I needed to reinstall some patches for windows me (done and red cross now changes to green tick), but internet explorer listing of patches indicates "lack of data to allow verification". Strangely, Belarc reports Internet Explorer to be Version 5.50.4134.100 Any advice gratly appreciated Thanks Andrew |

Thanks for reply
Yes, some months back I did a reinstall after a complete system freeze. Also, I recently installed the Security Update CD to try to fix the update problem. I am now getting the following error when clicking remove "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools" Error in setupwbv.dll Missing entry:IE6Maintenance Any thoughts on this error? Thanks again Andrew "Mike M" wrote in message ... Andrew, It would appear that at some stage you reinstalled Win Me over itself where IE6 SP1 had previously been installed and did not remove IE6 first. As a result you have a real mix of file versions as reinstalling Win Me will have installed IE 5.5 and this is what is throwing the Windows Update site. Note that IE 5.50.4134.100 is the version included as part of Win Me as distributed whereas IE 6.0.2800.1106 is indeed IE 6 SP1. What you need to do is to try and remove the remnants of IE6 and start all over. See KB 293907 - "How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 6" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293907). -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Andrew LeBreton wrote: I need assistance please with windows me updates please Windows update is saying I require KB833989, KB873374 & KB889293 which I have downloaded and saved to hard disc. Andrew.
I suspect that your only way forward now is to completely remove IE, then reinstall your preferred version - look here for instructions http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm post back with any questions (or use the feedback link on the site) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Andrew LeBreton" wrote in message ... Your information worked a charm. All OK now, just a shame there is not an easier method. Only difficulty I had was icons associated with explorer ended up with a funny multi-connected cube icon instead of the usual 'e'. Thanks Andrew "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Andrew. Great - thanks for the feedback!
Have you corrected the icon problem? try deleting the ShellIconCache file (in C:\Windows - may be hidden) and see if that helps. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Andrew LeBreton" wrote in message ... Yes icons are fixed, I changed them back manually. There was only half a dozen or so to do. AL "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Great - thanks for the feedback!
