msconfig, removing dupes

Someone posted yesterday regarding the elimination of
dupes, as opposed to unchecked boxes that aren't dupes,
from msconfig. You do the delete of only dupes at
Start/Programs/Disabled Startup Items. Select with dupe
with a Rclick and send it to the Recycle Bin. I'm not
sure how dupes get into msconfig either, but this
procedure works.

There are a lot more places where start up entries could reside than the
folder you indicate. To get rid of true duplicate entries, mark the
unmarked boxes, click OK and reboot.

To get rid of unwanted programs:

My personal rule of thumb is if a program is not used during every computer
session, I do not allow it to start at boot. To cut back on the number of
programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not
to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might
require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you
cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start up points
and remove the reference to it:

Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini
and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe):

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

If poking around in the registry is not for you, there is a freeware program
that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager,

You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by
doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might
be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program
and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry
in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again
after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the

There are seven run keys in the registry that are used to start programs:

If there is an item disabled in the Startup tab, MSconfig.exe, that was in
one of these keys, it will be in an identically named key except that there
will be a minus at the end, i.e., Run- I suppose any key could be
duplicated; however, I have only found keys #1, #2 and #5 duplicated in my
registry with a minus. If you want to get rid of a non-marked entry in
MSconfig, delete the key with the minus sign behind it.

When you disable an entry that is in the startup folder on the start menu, a
folder is created on the start menu called Disabled Startup Items. As
appropriate, delete the item from either the registry key or the Disabled
folder. If the item is the only thing in the registry key or Disabled
folder, you can delete the key or the folder also.

Items can start from the run= and load= lines in the win.ini file. If
disabled, they are placed in a norun= or noload= line. Go into the win.ini
file and change the appropriate line back to the way it was, i.e., change
norun=application name to run= and save the file.
