Default IE8 and Win98SE

Probably. AFAIK IE8 won't run on Windows 98SE.

And I don't think Firefox 3 will either. Perhaps 'upgrade' to Firefox
2?

Opera 10.54 runs on 98SE. The latest 10.60 gives a dll error on my system
(that happen with one of the earlier releases, as well, which was fixed in
the next update); I didn't check to see if that was a problem with 98SE in
general or just my computer.

On my Windows 98SE machine, I am running Opera 10.60 with no problems at
all. But first, I installed KernelEX (version 4.5) which allows the
installation of some (but not all) applications which are only
compatible with Windows XP and above.

I understand that with KernelEX in place that I should also be able to
install Firefox 3 but I have not done so as there are a number of
add-ons that I am very fond of which are not yet supported. So for now
I am sticking with Firefox 2.0.0.20.

As regards the OP's question on running IE8, I don't know the answer to
that. For that reason I am including the newsgroup
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion into my reply. The guys on that
site are real hot experts on how to prolong the life of Windows 98 and
will certainly be able to offer good solid advice.

SNIP

I use Opera USB@10. Compact build approved by Opera, has own web
site, "installs" by unzipping into a single directory and runs
perfectly - it is designed to run off a USB stick but can be
installed on the HD, as I did.

I see no point whatsoever in constantly updating to the latest
version of /anything/. As someone in Linux forums pointed out,
MS "security upgrades" are for MS's security, not the user's.

Use a good AV program (ESET NOD32 ver 2.7 for 9x/ME is still
available on some of their sites and updated daily, same lic. #
works for all versions - incl DOS) and you're fine.

I still use a Win9x graphics program from 1997 and see no reason
to witch. I used Opera 7.23 for YEARS but finally got tired of
the Flash plug-in crashing. Opera 10@USB solved that problem.

[See last few weeks here for a few threads about a tiny mod (I
checked it in a file compare program... about 30 bytes changed,
IIRC) of the very recent Adobe security-fixed update of the
Flash plug-in ver. 9 which makes most sites see it as ver. 10
and stop hassling you to update.]

For non-flash, non-javascript, no-infection possible super-fast
basic browsing, visit www.offbyone.com. Best browser around - I
only use Opera when I HAVE to use a site with fla**** and
java**** etc... Like my bank or You****.

IE (any version) is the most dangerous application ever written
(I use the word loosely).
