Default Blank Dialog Boxes

Some of the words in my dialog boxes are missing or faded. The 3
boxes at the top right hand corner are blank. Everything works fine
as long as I can remember what box to click on. It gets confusing
even trying to correct the problem because I can't see what I am
doing. Help! I'am running windows 98 SE.

What dialog boxes are you referring to (what product)? If you are referring
to the minimize, maximum and close buttons:

Default Blank Dialog Boxes

Example, The 2 boxes at the bottom of your response asking me to
rate it are blank. The start box at the bottem left corner has the
windows logo in the corner but it doesn't say start. The browse
boxes are blank. Email forward, reply, send boxes are faded.
Yes, the minimize, maximum and close buttons. I guess I call them
boxes.

I am running windows 98 SE. I'm a senior citizen and not very savy on the
computer and with blank buttons I don't know where to go.

Default Blank Dialog Boxes

It's the same for Windows 98 and 98SE.

OK, let's walk you through the steps. First of all, let's find out if your
Windows installation files are on your hard drive or if we'll need to look
on the installation CD. What kind of machine do you have? Brand name and
model, if you can. What does your Windows 98SE installation CD look like?

If the files are already on your system, they'll probably be in the
C:\Windows\OPTIONS\Cabs folder. To look in that folder, you can copy that
path (starting with C:\ and ending with Cabs) and then Paste it into your
StartRun box, then click OK. If there are several dozen CAB files in that
folder, then you won't need your installation CD. If there are only a few
files in that folder, then use FindFiles & Folders to search for
WIN98*.CAB. (WIN98, asterisk, dot, CAB) If you find lots of them, then write
down what folder they're in. If the CAB files aren't on the hard drive, then
they're in the \WIN98\ folder on the installation CD. If yours isn't a
standard installation CD, then I'll have to send you a copy of the file. (I
could do that, anyway, but it's better if you take this opportunity to learn
some new tricks, smile.)

The CAB file you want for Windows 98SE is Win98_52.cab. If it's on a CD,
copy that file to your Desktop. Now, wherever it is, open the CAB file by
double-clicking it. Then locate the MARLETT.TTF file and drag it to your
Desktop. Then close the CAB file. Now, follow these steps:

1. At the StartRun box, type in COMMAND, then press Enter. You should see
a command prompt like this:

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop

2. Run the following commands, making sure to include all the punctuation
and spaces that I include, pressing Enter at the end of each line. (Make
sure the slants lean the right way. One is a forward-slant, not a
back-slant.):

attrib -s -h c:\windows\fonts\marlett.ttf

copy marlett.ttf c:\windows\fonts /y

attrib +s +h c:\windows\fonts\marlett.ttf

exit

3. Restart your system. Delete the Marlett.ttf file from your Desktop and
also the CAB file that you copied there, if you did that. All done.

If you have a difficult time figuring out where the spaces are in the above
commands, copy the message from the Microsoft page where you're reading it
and then Paste it into a new Notepad file. That will let you use the cursor
to find the spaces. PLEASE let us know how it went, OK?
