i presume they went outside because they were more than one hundred
and ther was non more space

You might want to consider putting them on one or more toolbars. Maybe make
another taskbar too for the toolbars.

Is there actually a hard limit then? I thought the only such limit was
files in the root directory under FAT (which _is_ about 100, IIRR).

I'm not sure what you mean. My suggestion was only that the OP could have
very easy access to the shortcuts he now has on his desktop by putting them
into toolbars named appropriately (which would also clean up the desktop),
not that his problem with icons being "out of bounds" was due to too many.
AFAIK, you can have as many desktop icons as will fit in the space.

I have had his same problem at times and I normally have only a handful of
icons on the desktop. I always fixed it as "who where" outlined but sans
the icon saver.

That (you can have as many as you like) was my understanding too. I
asked because someone (I think the OP) raised the possibility that there
_is_ a limit.

Do you have a "Magnifier" program running (Accessibility option)?

i can't increase the resolution from the Control Panel
so to be able to "see" them
(i'm at 1024x768 that is the maximum allowed
by the Control Panel screen settings)

if i right click on the empty Desktot
I can dispose the icon by name, date ecc...
but so doing I will scramble my current disposition
(I currently have more the 80 icons on the Desktop)

so how to "catch" the icons outside the Desktop
and place them inside?

I'm only suggesting here that you might be fighting symptoms instead of
problems.

monitor.. i'm with 98, i presume only one monitor is supported
display adpater ... i presume i 1024x768 is the maximum

anyway changing/wotking with the two above devices will be too tricky...

i solved in another manner (se my following post)

the Desktop

note:
another possible reason that caused the problem,
was the use of the "Align to grid" command
(i presume that in English the name of the command
is this or a similar one):
so doing, when you have many icons, some of them will go outside Desktop
boundaries

Is this clutter not the main problem? There is no point keeping
on the Desktop a link (icon) that you do not use every day.
(I have just counted here -- 27 icons on the desktop. It is a
little more crowded than usual and some will soon be removed,
e.g. income tax.)

(It is indeed something like that.)

In my experience, it sometimes places icons on top of (or underneath)
other icons; I haven't experienced it moving them off the desktop
altogether. (I'm not saying it couldn't happen, though.)

It's a little arrogant to tell others how to use their computers. "a" -
and I - choose to have quite a lot of icons; each to his own.

Keeping actual _files_, rather than shortcuts to them, on the desktop
_can_ slow things down, especially in a roaming profile situation, but
those are unlikely to be using roaming profiles these days.

(I have just counted here -- 27 icons on the desktop. It is a

How many of those have you used today (or this week)?
