Default Best Internet Browser in 98 and 98SE

I wanted to start a new topic on this because there appears to be lots of
debate within this group on the best browser available for Windows 98/98SE.
I am curious as to why people like particular browsers for this legacy
operating system. I have finally received my motherboard but it will be a
few weeks until the system is back up and running to where I can start
posting and testing new software as I would like to in 98SE and of course I
would prefer it sooner rather than later but real life does interfere.

Revise last month's posts, starting to talk about this /again/
is like locking 10 people up in a room with no food, water, and

Of course, it is no easy matter to be polite; in so far, I mean,
as it requires us to show great respect for everybody, whereas
most people deserve none at all; and again in so far as it
demands that we should feign the most lively interest in people,
when we must be very glad that we have nothing to do with them.

I cant tell you the best, but I will tell you to avoid installing IE6.
IE6 really screws up windows98. On my Win98 computer I still have
IE5.5 (which is an upgrade from ver 5 that comes with 98). However, I
really hate IE and rarely use it. The last version of Firefox for 98
is the last version 2. That's an ok program, but it loads slow. I
also like K-meleon. Both are by Mozilla and free.
Some people like Opera. Personally I hate it.
You CAN NOT run Chrome on 98. There is Safari (from Apple), which
will not install in 98 (at least not the last version). There are
also a few lesser known browsers. I never found one that's worth
much, and many require XP.

Lastly, there's Avant Browser. It runs off the IE engine built into
Windows. It has more features than IE, but it's still IE, and all
versions of IE seem to crash regularly in 98, and in Win2000 (on my
laptop) too. I think IE is Microsoft's biggest failure, unless IE 7
and 8 are better, I dont know,,,,,,

Which would mean you wouldn't be able to install any
security updates via Windows Update. Not a good idea.

Just curious, why would that be?

Jerome has been brainwashed by MS into thinking he needs
"updates" (which could be called, of course, many other things).
If one does not use IE/OE and/or MS Office (and there is NO
reason why a rational person would need to use either for
ANYTHING, one doesn't need any updates.

Having said that, anything you need you will find here. This
guy, formerly known as Axcel216, known more about Windows than
Microsoft.

My installation of 98 has
been the same install since 99. It's been restored a few

SNIP

saying someone cant use Firefox to update Windows? I never
tried it from what I recall.

I haven't had IE for about a decade [whatever version cane with
Win98se IS installed so I can read chm files but my firewall
won't let it access the net] and I haven't installed any updates
either. I don't know if MS rejects non-IE browser requests for
updates, but you can get them other places, except you don't
need them (see above).

If you want them ANYWAY, he
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

I should mention that I dont upgrade everytime MS comes up
with one. Win98se always works fine for me, so I dont mess
with it. If it's not broke, dont fix it.

Amen.

And if your just
talking about virus security stuff, I dont and wont run any
AV software.

I do, and all I have caught in 15 years are a few minor Trojans
in some hacks and pirate versions - 88% (I used to try and
delete a LOT of software until I got bored). Generally, since I
also run InCtrl4 which monitors all changes to the install
dire., win, win\sys, and the registry, all I have to do is look
at that and think a little.

That **** causes more problems than most viruses.

Not if you have the "FDA-approved" ****. But there ARE many VERY
badly designed AV programs, and they all feed on people vastly-
exaggerated paranoia. I used F-Prot for DOS for AGES it died,
now I use ESET NOD32 - there's still a 98 version, hard to find,
but available. Signatures are guaranteed to be the same for
about another year at least. Because of a stupid new piece of
software I was forced to install XP on another partition and I
have the XP version of ESET there. I prefer the simplicity off
the 98 version, but I can always use the XP version to scan
whatever drive/partition I need to. Same registration works for
all versions (there's a DOS version too if you can find it).

I have "Hijack This", if my system is acting
weird, I run that program and it pretty much tells all.
That's what I like about Win98. It rarely ever gets
viruses anymore. The rare spyware **** I get, I just
manually delete the bad file.

/Slightly/ risky, but probably not a big deal. You are obviously
not paranoid about your personal/financial info. I /would
install Spybot Search & Destroy, runs on 98, and I /would/
consider $40 for ESET. I also use and recommend the free version
of Agnitum Outpost Firewall 1.0.1817 from 2002.

It's been years since I got any malware in 98. In just
about 4 hours online, I had 3 malware items in XP. After
that happened, I quit using my XP computer online entirely.
It's not connected to the internet at all.

I would not go online with xp if you held a gun to my head.

I only use to
run a few programs that I cant use in 98. There's no
reason to connect more than one computer to the internet.

You show a rare combination of intelligence and common sense.

If I download something for XP, I just copy it to that
computer with one of those USB sticks.

Exactly. I don't own a single USB device, but I just burn a CD-R
if I need to transfer.

Since I'm in this discussion, I got a question. If I was
to install Win98 on another computer, from scratch, isn't
there a place to download ALL of the updates until MS
stopped supporting Win98? If this is the case, why would I
need IE (or any browser) at all. I'd just take that
downloaded update package, burned to CD, and run the CD.
So, getting back to your original comment, if I had this
all on CD, why would I need ANY browser to update?

You wouldn't. See the 2 links I provided above.

By the way, does anyone know where someone can download the
entire update package? I've been thinking I should get it
before nobody uses 98 anymore.

A few people probably always will but it's a good idea to have a
copy of everything. There are things you can NOT get anymore,
like the winsock fix I mentioned and posted a few days ago.

SNIP

I went back to 2.

If you don't care about yEnc or NZB's, you might like
NewsXpress.
http://cws.internet.com/file/11602.htm

If you want yEnc and NZB, the latest GrabIt works great and fast
as hell with its 32-connection DL's (works on 98 - 1.6* versions
did not) and if you want yEnc /and/ some control over the
software (GrabIt is only good for one thing, cf. its name) /and/
like to post, XNews was largely inspired by NewsXpress and is
the best except does not do NZB's which GrabIt excels at.

As someone once said "Keep It Simple Stupid".

Someone should go over to Redmond and brand a few foreheads with
that saying mirrored so they see it when they look at their
stupid mugs when they go to the john.
