Default dos mode

With computer started in dos mode, usb keyboard does not
operate. Any ideas anyone?

You will have to use a standard keyboard or a PS/2 adapter as far as I know.

Either get a driver so it can be used in DOS, or get an
adapter USB to PS2. Your PC should have come with one.
Some USB apps, devices can function in DOS provided that
drivers are available, but otherwise, USB is Windows mode
only.
