hello,
I am using windows 98se at the moment. I have SP1 of which means I have OE6 etc. To all others doing the same, check your 'windows' folder for another 'folder' called 'local settings'. \ Under this folder you will come across another folder called ...... 'Content IE5', of which you will find other 'folders' with ridiculous names dreamed up by microsoft programmers or the american gov'. If you are like me, and only use IE6, you will start to wonder why information is being contained in these folders.? If you are also like me, and DONT even use a 'microsoft' Browser, then you are starting to ask Questions. Personally, I would not use microsofts IE browser, as there isnt enough gold on this planet to bribe me with, and hence, I am asking all readers to 'ask' the question as to 'why' a folder exists under their windows folder called "temporary internet files', of which contains a folder called 'Content IE5', of which contains 4 or 5 other folders of which naming conventions dont even exist to discuss the logic thereof. But, a matter of more importance, is 'why' the 'file' inside said folders called 'index.dat' refuses to be 'deleted'? So, we have microsoft collecting 'data' even though we dont even use their 'browser', of which is being done behind our backs, and we users cant even delete the file of which the information is kept in. Is anyone here a tad suspcious?? |

If you are like me, and only use IE6, you will start to wonder why information is being contained in these folders.? If you study these "ridiculous" folder names and the dates of their creation and their contents you may notice: (a) They hold Temporary Internet Files. All browsers (e.g. Mozilla as well as IE and others) use these to speed up monitor display of web sites you visit a second time. Your browser / Tools option lets you set how long your PC retains these files, days, weeks or months. (b) The folder names appear to be time/date codes. But, a matter of more importance, is 'why' the 'file' inside said folders called 'index.dat' refuses to be 'deleted'? This file is Windows-protected, so that a browser can make use of the small files listed there (mostly fragments of Internet pages you have viewed once before.) E.g. an ..RA file is a link (sort of URL) to an audio file you have already played. Click on it and it will restart playing the audio file without delay. Click on a JPG file and you will see the picture, also instantly. So, we have microsoft collecting 'data' even though we dont even use their 'browser', of which is being done behind our backs, and we users cant even delete the file of which the information is kept in. Not so. DOS is immune from Windows protection, i.e. from a DOS prompt we can remove any file we like from our PCs (even if Windows protects it as useful or essential.) A file or files on your PC is no proof "microsoft is collecting 'data'" from you. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

To answer your question: NO.
Before making baseless accusations, it is often best to do some research so you have an idea of what you are talking about. The folders you describe are part of IE--you have IE installed, the folders come with it. The funny named folders are so named to prevent an exploit by others. The contents of these folders are files used to speed up browsing. If you have dial up (or remember dial up), you'll note the web pages load very slowly. Yet if you use the back button, the page pops up fairly fast. That's because it uses the contents of the funny named folders rather than downloading the web page again. The folders also contain copies of cookies and I am guessing that they are used to speed up the process somehow. All contents (except the index file) can be deleted normally. The index.dat file can be deleted from DOS; however, it will be rebuilt upon rebooting as it is a required file. Finally, it's kind of funny that you think MS is keeping tabs on people. With a couple of billion (wild guess) computers running Windows, it would be some task to collect all the data and then single out a person--wouldn't it? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Jeff" wrote in message ... hello, I am using windows 98se at the moment. some task to collect all the data and then single out a person--wouldn't it? Wrong question to ask. The right question is: Has it been budgeted for? IMO, almost certainly. |

Coincidentally, I just had occation to be curious about that index.dat file since it was one of only five files, out of all 15,xxx+ files that I just tried to back up to my new hard drive, that wouldn't copy over. My report from the backup job said "it" and the other 4 files...content.ie5 and the like were "busy" so it couldn't back them up, however, I was able to copy the index.dat to my F: ( hard drive) manually. I don't think the files were really that busy....probably just on break g....and silly me worrying about losing the little buggers....huh? rvw |
