HELP !! Defrag hang, not machine does not boot at all !!
I tried to defrag my machine. It hanged after 80% completion and
Alt-ctrl-del would not respond at all. So I Reset the machine. Now when I try to reboot the machine beeps continuously (like a siren). The monitor only says "Check Signal Please". I pressed Ctrl key but there is not change. I also inserted Emergency boot disk but the machine continues beeping on reset and does not even attempt to read the floppy drive. Please help !! I am completely lost. Ryan |

Hello Ryan,
Try switching off the computer_ and then unplugging its power socket for about five minutes. Then try booting again. I hope that resolves the immediate problem and once you have resolved it, carry out ScanDisk and Defrag. The best m_anner in which to run Defrag_ is to run Scandisk first and then Defrag, and also both in Safe mode and with the Screen Saver off. To get into Safe mode switch on the computer and keep pressing "F5" again and again until the computer starts loading windows. Another way to get into Safe mode is to switch on the computer and keep pressing "F8" again and again until the Startup menu appears, from which select number 3 - Safe mode. Sometimes Defrag stalls at zero percent. I find this is resolved simply by exiting Defrag and immediately restarting it. To return Windows to normal mode, simply restart the computer from the normal Shutdown menu. Upon returning to normal mode you may find your Desktop icons have moved due to the different screen area which was used by Safe mode. Don't forget to switch your screen saver back on. (* Anything in this message is accepted entirely at your own risk. It is given in good faith but could still be wrong. *) Hope that helps. -----Original Message----- I tried to defrag my machine. Probably it won't boot the floppy because BIOS needs to be set to try
the floppy before the hard drive. But I can't imagine what damage may have been done by a Defrag aborted in that manner at 80%. Anyway... Enter BIOS Setup & set it to boot the Floppy first. You must press a key at boot to enter BIOS Setup. If you don't know the key to press, try "Esc" at the manufacturer's logo. Then, the key to press to enter BIOS setup will show up. Quickly press it. For this Compaq, it is F10. In BIOS, use TAB & the arrow keys to navigate, & ENTER to select. (Well, there may be a legend showing your keys are different.) (a) Find the "Boot Order" menu, & set it to boot the floppy first. (b) Hit ENTER, or whatever key shows in the legend to enable. (c) Find & select "Accept changes & Exit" in the menus. While in there, you'd better go through all the menus & jot down the settings. If they are not set to defaults, and somehow, someday, they are cleared, all these settings will have to be input again. .......Start.....something from Candlin about it........ Usually DEL, but F1, F2, F10 are also common. Other keystrokes which might work a AMI BIOS: Del key during the POST DTK BIOS: Esc key during the POST Award BIOS: Ctrl-Alt-Esc Misc BIOS: Ctrl-Esc Phoenix BIOS: Ctrl-Alt-Esc or Ctrl-Alt-S IBM PS/2 BIOS: Ctrl-Alt-Ins after Ctrl-Alt-Del If all else fails, shut down, power off, unplug the keyboard, and power up again, as some older systems will default to the CMOS Setup if a keyboard is not found. .......End........................................ ....................... -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Ryan" wrote in message om... | I tried to defrag my machine. I checked that the machine has Award BIOS.
Thanks for the responses. Well, I tried unplugging for some time, plugging in and then reboot. - No Change (NC). Computer on boot beeps high/low continuously. Monitor does nothing - only says Check Signal and shuts off. I cannot enter the BIOS setup at all. Also emergency boot disk is of no use as machine does not try to read drive on boot. Tried the following: (a) Disconnected hard drive from motherboard and reboot. - No Change (NC) (b) Removed RAM from board and reboot - (NC) (c) Checked that everything is seated tight in the slots - (NC) (d) Cleared CMOS based on jumper instructions provided in motherboard (OZZY) manual. - (NC). Someone mentioned that it could be a video card problem or a bad CPU issue. Note that this started after I had to reset after a defrag (attempt) that ran for more than a day. I had to reset after 80% completion as machine seemed to have hanged. There were no chirps from the machine CPU (dead??) and Alt-Ctrl-Del would not respond. How can I test this? Especially if the CPU is bad - I may have to take it to a shop as I don't have another machine where I can swap CPUs to see if that will fix it. Are Intel P3 failures common like this? Well, my machine is 5 years old now. Thanks! Ryan "PCR" wrote in message ... Probably it won't boot the floppy because BIOS needs to be set to try the floppy before the hard drive.
