Default IE6 download question

My current IE6 has suffered so many patches and 'enhancements' that it has
become a nuisance. If the web page contains an error or a long script is
terminated, IE6 chokes in it and even after the program is closed it may
take up to 10 min. (!) for win98se to resume normal operation. And about 1
time out of 3 I am left with a mutilated desktop without icons on the status
line.
So I decided to download it from Microsoft, delete the current one, remove
remnants from registry etc. But I got only an installer that loaded a
wizzard that loaded some updates I didn't know I needed. It seems that
Microsoft decides for me what I need and need not, based on the current
config.
I could uninstall first, install IE5 from the Win98 CD and go to Microsoft
for an update to IE6-SP1, but there must be a shorter method.
Do I have to save the favourites and all email messages before installing?

Default IE6 download question

Try overinstalling IE6 SP1.

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
StartRunIE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

Excellent suggestion, thank you.
IE6 behaves normal again. It didn't cure a long existing shutdown problem
after using IE6, but everything else is O/K.

We had a lengthy discussion about this topic last year in this newgroup,
but
no cure was found. The original post was 'program without a name'. After
dialup and using IE6, win98se shutdown is postponed because a window pops
up
that says 'this program is not responding'. I think every win98 user who
has
used ctrl-alt-del is familiar with it, but in my case there is no program
name, so the culprit cannot be located. It must be a sub-process that is
left alive after the parent has shut down. Tools like regalyzer, regmon
and
filemon cannot look beyond the closedown command. After wasting many hours
searching, I suspect the software for the ISDN card to be responsible
(Asuscom ISDN-Link). Although IE6 triggers the problem it will not be the
cause of it, or other readers would have surely mentioned it.

Many of these -if not all- were advised last year by fellow MPV's and other
contributors. I followed up on most of them and found nothing except some
cookies that did no real harm but by some scanners were marked as
Questionable.
There's no spyware, malware, adware, just underware.
The only dubious entries in the startup log were (and are):
[000E02CA] Starting Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)
[000E02CA] Started Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)
[000E02CA] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)
[000E02CA] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\ROOT\0)
[000E02CA] Starting Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)
[000E02CA] Started Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)
[000E02CA] Enumerating Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)
[000E02CA] Enumerated Unknown (HTREE\RESERVED\0)
But from various parties I was assured that this is normal with win98se,
just like the ndis2sup.dll load failure. Why such glitches in a 10 year old
O/S have never been straightened out I don't know, but I promised Microsoft
to use the software 'as is' because they left me no choice.

The process Explorer is a valuable tool, but that also cannot look beyond
the shutdown command.
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ has a "window watcher" where you can
enable/disable nameless processes. There are 60 of them when IE6 and OE are
loaded, but unfortunately it is just a 'watcher' without a tool to kill a
process.

searching, I suspect the software for the ISDN card to be responsible
(Asuscom ISDN-Link). Although IE6 triggers the problem it will not be
the
cause of it, or other readers would have surely mentioned it.

Excellent suggestion, thank you.
IE6 behaves normal again. It didn't cure a long existing shutdown
problem
after using IE6, but everything else is O/K.

Try overinstalling IE6 SP1.

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer
(includes your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going
offline). StartRunIE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select
all
the
parts you use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download)
and
overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in
at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

My current IE6 has suffered so many patches and 'enhancements' that
it
has
become a nuisance. If the web page contains an error or a long
script
is
terminated, IE6 chokes in it and even after the program is closed it
may
take up to 10 min. (!) for win98se to resume normal operation. And
about
1
time out of 3 I am left with a mutilated desktop without icons on
the
status
line.
So I decided to download it from Microsoft, delete the current one,
remove
remnants from registry etc. But I got only an installer that loaded
a
wizzard that loaded some updates I didn't know I needed. It seems
that
Microsoft decides for me what I need and need not, based on the
current
config.
I could uninstall first, install IE5 from the Win98 CD and go to
Microsoft
for an update to IE6-SP1, but there must be a shorter method.
Do I have to save the favourites and all email messages before
installing?
