writing at top - ' windows protection error. please restart computer'

Protected mode was introduced by Intel some 2 decades ago to let the cpu
mimic a multiprocessor computer. Windows would not have been possible
without it. There is a simple instruction to switch from normal mode to
protected mode, but the software loaded at/after the switch point must
comply with a lot of rules. Protection errors are often caused by software
performing an illegal action, like crossing their assigned memory border.
Software does that if a file is corrupt, a memory bank defective or the
speed is beyond the cpu's capability (BIOS settings for refresh rate, clock
cycles etc.) Application software can also generate a protected mode error
if a situation arises which the writer did not anticipate, like a very
complicated graphic with too many elements. If the error occurs at windows
loading time, there is almost certainly a hardware problem.

Read about memory limitation of Win98. I've got a 1Meg memory strip, which
was no problem till I flashed my bios. I have now just limited the memory,
via msconfig, to just under 512Meg. Computer booted fine this morning, so
will monitor it to see if the windows protection error recurs with this
setting.

Hai

There are so many reasons for windows protection error. One simple
reason is due to corrupted display drivers. Start 98 in safe mode then
uninstall display drivers. Then again install display drivers.

You can go to safe mode by pressing F8 while booting, then from the
options choose safe mode.

If your system is not at all going to safe mode, other things cause
windows protection error. Your registry may be corrupted or some other
reason. So once visit microsoft support center site given below.
