My wife complains that I didn't properly install the ISDN modem in her
Compaq Armada, because half the time when she wants to go online, there
comes a 'modem not found' warning. But the installation offers no room for
mistakes. The PCMCIA card is in its slot, W98 says it found new hardware and
you offer it the CD from which it picks the inf file and drivers, all from
Xircom (now Intel). In the config menu you enter the phone nrs and select 1
or 2 channel coms, and that's all. There is a loopback test program to check
the cable between the card and the phone company's ISDN hub, there is no
problem there.
If W98 cannot find the modem it needs a reboot, sometimes more that one. It
seems that after standby the problem occurs more frequent, at least that's
what my wife says.
The laptop has only IE-5 and OE to connect to the outside world, all
straight from the W98SE OEM CD, no patches installed.
Compaqs have always been tricky machines when it comes to adding hardware,
but once succesfully installed I cannot think of any mechanism that could
cause erratic behaviour like this.

Did you check to be sure the card is firmly seated?

Unplug and replug it.

I did that several times before I posted, i's not that kind of problem.

I think (but I'm not sure) that when you put a laptop in standby, a memory
image is written to disk and restored when the machine wakes up again. It
can also be that the memory remains powered, but since that is dynamic ram,
the cpu should also keep working at a reduced pace to take care of refresh
cycles. Whatever method Compaq uses, hard disk, video and the ISDN card will
not be powered during standby . No doubt there will be memory on the card
for buffers, flags etc. That might be the heart of the problem. Good
thinking!
