Default Windows doesn't boot -- how to track down hardware/driver issue?

W98 SE doesn't boot on my IBM ThinkPad 600. I can boot to
Safe Mode and Step-by-Step loading mode, but not to regular
mode.

ONSET:

Happened afterI used New Hardware Wizard to try to
add the following:

1. Ports (COM & LPT)
Communications Port (Microsoft) [4-23-1999]
Communications Port (Microsoft) [8-24-1996]
Lucent Controllerless Modem Port

2. System Devices
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS

DIAGNOSTIC MESSAGES:

Vary, but one possibly more relevant one read:

Your multi-function device (Intel 82371AB/EB PCI
Master IDE Controller) has some child devices using
32-bit drivers and others using compatibility-mode
drivers. This configuration is not supported so your
computer has been halted...

Another, which has not recurred, was:

An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C028B97A in VxD
IFSMGR(04)...

WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR:

1. Used Device Manager to remove:
Communications Port (Microsoft) [8-24-1996]
Lucent Controllerless Modem Port
and rebooted

2. Renamed Win.ini to Win.xxx and rebooted

3. Saved System.ini, copied System.cb (clean boot) to
System.ini and rebooted

4. Used a previously backed up System.ini and rebooted

5. Ran msconfig.exe, unchecked system.ini, rebooted

6. In Step-by-Step boot mode, tried various things,
including not loading the last driver to load before
system hangs up (spccrdx.vxd)

None of these helped.

QUESTIONS:

1. In Device Manager, System Devices, may I safely
remove either/both of these?
a. Intel 82371AB PCI to ISA bridge (EIO Mode)
b. Intel 82371AB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

2. In Device Manager, may I safely remove COM1?

3. What should I try next? Any other suggestions or
ideas? (I don't have the W98 installation disks
with me).

4. Is there a website with good information about how to
proceed?

5. Ditto for online technical discussion forums where,
for example, I might post the bootlog for comments
or suggestions.

Thanks!!

John

As an aside to Brian's reply......why were you trying to add these devices via Add
New Hardware? What's the "rest of the story"?

The internal modem of my ThinkPad 600 has never worked running W98 SE.
I've tried everything I can think of to get it to run. If I swap
internal hard disks and run Windows 2000, the modem works fine.

The ThinkPad Modem software, which should set things up, doesn't work,
and says that W98 doesn't recognize the modem.

The device isn't recognized by plug & play, and isn't on the list of
other devices the Add New Hardware Wizard displays.

So, all that said, I resorted to trying to add these other devices
hoping that I might find the right one. The COM devices were obvious
choices. The modem has the acronym ACP in its title, suggesting I
might try installing the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
(ACPI) BIOS (whatever that is).

And that's the rest of the story. If I can get the thing booting
again, then may be I can think about how to get the internal modem
working.

No I'm not. That's what I thought. About the first thing I did was
uses Device Manager to uninstall this.

I'll check the config.sys, but have to swap disks, first. I wonder how
I can tell if a driver is a real mode driver.

Are there any "NOIDE" entries in your registry?

I guess I'll check that. I don't know much about the registry or how
to check it. Do I use regedit or something like that?

Thanks for your suggestions.

In a ThinkPad support forum someone suggested that the problem might
have been caused by the attempt to install:

Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS

He suggested that "attempts to change a computer (ThinkPad or
otherwise) from APM mode to ACPI mode can cause irreversible problems
for the OS" so that re-installing W98SE may be the only option.

I have W98 system disks, but not with me, and therefore would need to
order new ones. Before I try a re-install, I might as well at least
try to remove the ACPI or reactivate the APM.

Is APM something (re)-installable or otherwise modifiable from the
Device Manager?

Is the ACPI something loaded at startup? Is there some associated
driver that I can disable in my System.ini file?

I don't know how to attack that problem directly in Device Manager or in Add New Hardware. Maybe someone will. It could be a "/Restore" will get you back to where you were, or close enough to it to boot.

Here is how to recover an older Registry...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...87&Product=w98
Description of the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe)
(183887) - When you start your computer successfully, the Windows
Registry Checker tool (Scanreg.exe) creates a backup of system files and
registry configuration information (including user account information,
protocol bindings, software program settings, and...

I'm not a big proponent of a "/Restore", but sometimes it can do amazing things. Maybe, before trying it, copy your current Registry backup files to a new folder.

(a) Boot to DOS (hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu, &
select "Command Prompt Only")

(b) DIR C:\Windows\Sysbckup\RB???.cab /od
Shows you the current backups sorted by date.

(c) MD C:\RegBckup
This makes a new folder named RegBckup.

(d) COPY C:\Windows\Sysbckup\RB???.cab C:\RegBckup
This copies your Registry backups to the new folder, because the
originals will change as you do the following...

(e) SCANREG /Restore

It will offer five, one for each of the last five separate days you
booted successfully. Start with the one of the day the problem began, as
these backups of the entire Registry (& System.ini & Win.ini) are done
at boot, not at shut down.

CAVEAT: A /Restore restores settings only. If there was a file change
(other than to System.ini & Win.ini), those cannot be undone this way.
That could be a problem, especially if there was a hardware change or
large un/in-stall since the backup was made. Also, a large settings
change, such as adding/removing a User Profile, is likely best undone a
different way. Finally, some apps may keep a small database in the
Registry. I do believe Explorer itself may keep it's list of blocked
sites there.

Naturally, you will not sue,

Yes, use regedit and search for NOIDE, or try this key:

Brian,

Thanks for your helpful reply. For the possible benefit of any future
readers who have this problem, I found the Microsoft article on
cleanboot,

How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;Q192926

and the method of restoring by halves to be very useful.
