Thumb drive problems with Windows 98

Hi,

I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222A
and I'm trying to make general use of a thumbdrive:
Kingston DataTraveler DTI/1GB. I can usually
get the first one I bought to work, but for some
reason I have to tell it where the driver is every
time it happens to work even though it goes right
to it when prompted during the install, acting like
it already knows right where it is. So why doesn't
it just use it and work each time, instead of always
making me reinstall it or whatever?

Thinking they should all work as well/badly as
that one I bought a couple more, even though
when the one I bought first did work it was even
slower than the old 3.5 floppies I have been using.
When I put the new ones in, they are even worse.
Sometimes I get the message:

The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Removable Disk (F).Ink'
refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the
network resource is available, and then try again.

Is there a type of thumb drive that will work dependably
with Windows 98, and/or a way to get this type (which
is the cheapest I could find) to work?

I would highly suggest trying to upgrade to XP service pack 2, then if you
need '98 for certain software to work, download virtual PC from MS, install
'98 on it. Works good for me.

I am using a cheap "Astone" 1GB thumb drive under 98SE. First time up I
insttalled the driver, then plugged it in and everything went to plan. (I've
seen some monumental messes from plugging a USB device into a 98SE machine
BEFORE the drivers were installed).

In those days I had only the two USB-A receptacles on the rear of the case/mobo.
To improve flexibility, I added a 4+1 port USB2 card and a 4-port front-of-case
USB2 hub connected to the expansion ("+1") port on the card. The system
responds to the thumb drive in any port, welcoming it like a long lost friend.
(I have seen cases where the system insists a thumb drive is a "found new
hardware" case first time it is plugged into another port, i.e. it wants to
"install" it on *each* port).

Maybe I've been lucky. Or maybe you've been unlucky. I know that some thumb
drives are more problematic than others.

Am using a Sandisk 1GB thumb drive on 98SE/ME/XP. Had to get the driver for
98SE at the sandisk website. Works fine in all 3 OSes.
Using onboard USB2 port routed to a front panel on the PC.
I don't use desktop shortcuts for access. Rather, I open windows explorer.
The thumb drive always uses drive letter w: in my case.

Obviously you haven't got them installed properly.

I'd try to re-install the drivers by updating the driver and finding
the driver inf file and re-installing.

I have all sorts of flash drives and all work well with Win98SE and
also all my other OS flavours.
