The error message you are seeing when attempting to open Help & Support is
probably the result of installing the recent KB911562 hotfix either via
Automatic Update or from the Windows Update site.

The following should fix the problem:
Download and install MDAC 2.8 SP1 from
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...f/MDAC_TYP.EXE
Check whether you can now access Help & Support. You should hopefully now
be able to do this.
Now visit the Windows Update site download and install KB911562 again..
Don't worry the patch for MDAC 2.8 SP1 has none of the problems associated
with the patch for MDAC 2.8 which is I suspect the version you are running
at present.

Please post back and let us know how you got on.

Jim,

There's no relationship between the two problems, or at least there
shouldn't be g. What is the exact error message you see when attempting
to create a system restore checkpoint? Knowing this should help in
finding the cause and therefore what to do to solve the problem.

One question if I may. Do you recall when you first installed the
KB911562 hotfix which is what probably broke Help & Restore. You can
check this by looking at your update history on the Windows Update site.
I really would appreciate this information if possible. Thanks.

restore point and there are no other restore points to go back to.

Jim,

Thanks for the information as to when you first downloaded the broken
version of KB911562.

You say you cannot create a checkpoint but without more information there
is little that I or anyone else can do to help you. What EXACTLY happens
and what do you see when attempting to create a system restore checkpoint?
Naturally if you are unable to make a checkpoint then its unlikely the
system can either so having no checkpoints doesn't really come as a
surprise. Do you have any idea as to when this problem might have
started?

In the absence of any information to work with my first suggestion is to
reset system restore as follows:
Control Panel | System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting,
check "Disable System Restore", immediately reboot and then back to
Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System Restore" and once again
immediately reboot.

Now try creating a checkpoint. Any luck? If not how big is the \_RESTORE
folder on the C:\ drive? To fully see this folder in Windows Explorer you
will have to enable the viewing of all hidden files and folders. Do this
in Windows Explorer as follows: Tools | Folder Options | View and check
"Show hidden files and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected system files".
Also how big are the ARCHIVE and TEMP sub-folders?

Why can't you download and install MDAC 2.8 SP1 since it is the fix for
your problem?

... my PC hung. Now I can't perform any thing on my PC.

possibly! g

I wonder if a re-boot might help?

Mart,

Well that error shouldn't hang the PC but perhaps it does in Safe Mode?
Re-booting should certainly help as would knowing why the PC is now
booting to Safe Mode.
