... i go into display in windows 98 and try to change it but it wont change even after i reboot it always returns to 16 and wont stay on 256 colors First thing to check is the driver software for the video card. If not identified by brand and model in / start / settings / control panel / system / device manager (which probably shows a yellow triangular trouble flag) you can run free diagnostics (e.g. from www.belarc.com ) then go to the manufacturer's web site to download the right driver for Win98, then load it via the same screen / Properties. Alternatively, has the monitor changed? The quick cure for this is to remove all entries for Monitor in the Device Manager, then reboot, and Windows is supposed then to detect the monitor and load the drivers it requires (usually generic.) Post results here. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

In Safe Mode, you can only get that primitive screen, because advanced drivers
won't be used for diagnostic reasons. If you still can get only the primitive one in Normal Mode, then... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127139 Troubleshooting Video Problems in Windows "START, Run, MSConfig, Advanced button". If checked, then uncheck "VGA 640x480x16", & reboot. "Control Panel, Display, Settings tab". Select as you wish from the Colors dropdown menu & the Size slider. Really, you should need nothing higher than "High Color (16 bit)", for speed/resource considerations. If you move the Screen Area slider to 1024x768 there, be sure to click the Advanced button, & select Large fonts. Try to get your colors/size at least twice that way. If it continues to fail, you may need to reinstall your Monitor or Display Adapter... For the Monitor... (1) Boot to Safe Mode (Hold F5 as you boot or CTRL for the Startup Menu) (2) "START, Settings, Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab" (3) Open the Monitors branch, & Remove all entries. Perhaps, FIRST, even in Normal Mode, note what is installed similar to below for the Adapter. That is... (a) D-Clk the monitor there for Properties, Driver tab. (b) Click the Update Driver button, then "Next". (c) Bolt "Display a list...", & click "Next". (d) Bolt "Show all hardware". Examine the two panes to see what is currently installed. That is likely what you wish to end up with, after step (4). (4) Boot to Normal Mode. Hopefully, it will be rediscovered & installed. Then, if still necessary, here is the rigmarole of the Display Adapter... .......Quote.......... The first thing to do is to remove the video adapter you have installed. Right-click on the desktop; choose "Properties" from the drop-down menu; select "Settings;" click on the "Advanced" button; and click on "Adapter". An adapter is a program that tells Windows how to deal with a specific video card. Make note of the adapter that is currently installed. Then, change the adapter to "Standard Display Adapter (VGA)" and restart the system. [That is: Click "Change, Next, bolt 'Display a List...', Next, bolt 'Show all hardware', scroll left pane to top, select '(Standard display types)', select 'Standard Display Adapter (VGA)' in right pane, click 'Next'"... PCR] This will remove the current adapter and replace it with a generic VGA adapter that works with all video cards. You will not like VGA because it supports only 16 colors, but the purpose of installing it is to get rid of whatever was there before. Next, return to the adapter screen and install an adapter that matches your video card. This may or may not be the adapter that you are using now. Examine the materials you received with your computer to see if they include a CD-ROM or floppy disk that contains the correct video adapter. Or go to the Gateway website and see if they have an adapter for you to download. Or check the website of the company that made your video card. Bill Starbuck (MVP) .......End....of quote.... I guess it must vary per video adapter &/or monitor what happens when you go to small fonts at 1024x768. Also, some adapter/monitor software may better handle the load of "True Color" (32 bit). But I do know with a Trident Blade 3D/MVP4 (63) video adapter & my Compaq supersized MV720 monitor (now dead), it was impossible to read the START menus & Desktop at that setting! The font & icons were way too tiny! Nevertheless, I'll see whether I can modify the language for that line a little next time I post it, as you & the other one add up to two now. OK, thanks. |

As I see it, you were quoting starbuck, who was initially a Win95 MVP IIRC.

Well, it required a reboot, but I tried that small font setting with
this new EN5400e 15" LCD monitor, same Trident Blade 3D/MVP4 (63) video adapter. Things are readable, but small-- especially the icons in the system tray are small. I guess I'll stick with that same modification, but I guess the chances of true unreadability is slim... "If you move the Screen Area slider to 1024x768 there, possibly click the Advanced button, & select Large fonts too— or there is a chance you end up with tiny, unreadable fonts!" But, as far as "True Color (32 bit)", I'm fairly sure I read that bit about resources in "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), & likely I'll let that be. But let me go to THAT setting too a while before a final, irrevocable decision is made-- damn, it says there may be problems without another reboot, if I change to it. Therefore, I must remember to try it later. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "PCR" wrote in message ... | No, that part was all me. You have to realize that these resource/speed issues have a widely varying
impact on the system depending on the hardware. To make such broad statements without putting them into context with regard to motherboard/CPU and video card specs is being just too broad. -- Gary S. "Control Panel, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button"
Hmmm... Resource Meter won't budge from User-82% GDI-93% at boot, no matter whether I am at "High Color (16 bit) or "True Color (32 bit)". Likewise, there was no difference in resources at small or large fonts, right after reboot anyhow. While that result isn't quite definitive enough for me to outright call Livingston or Straub an outright liar, I hereby quietly do drop the following line from that master post of mine... "Really, you should need nothing higher than "High Color (16 bit)", for speed/resource considerations." BUT, let it be on 98 rules head, IF anyone actually does get slower or run out of resources over this-- or can't see his screen! Personally, I have gone back to the way I had it-- 1024x768 resolution, 16-bit color & LARGE fonts! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "PCR" wrote in message ... | Well, it required a reboot, but I tried that small font setting with | this new EN5400e 15" LCD monitor, same Trident Blade 3D/MVP4 (63) video | adapter.
