Default video driver update-Norton problems

Long story- Norton problems- But for now how do you
upgrade latest video driver for auto-protect? Just curious-
may have been some of the problems. Tried to upgrade by
downloading from symantec site. Why would windows install
a system like norton if not compatible??-Killed Norton 01
with exe tool. In process of killing 04 -used install-
uninstall but crap still laying around all over the place-
Temp folder-bunch of stuff-downloaded program files-bunch
of stuff-very frustrated. Still waiting to hear from
symantec tech guys, afraid to download again- so no
antivirus here, scary-and never heard of AVG Please
help, I am computor illereate-Need software antivirus
compatiable with Win Me.
Oh, and by the way no blue screen errors, no problems at
all , funny huh, (I think Norton is a virus too.)

Mary......until one of the others helps you, please listen to a couple of
things.

First....tech support at Norton is not good......so don't wait for a reply.
And more importantly, you MUST put an antivirus program on your computer if
you are going to access the internet. AVG is a good, free program.....go to
www.grisoft.com and download it. Don't forget to update the virus
definitions. But do make sure that Norton is uninstalled first, before
opening any other antivirus program.

As for remnants of Norton in your C:\Windows TEMP folder, delete them.
Leave them in the Recycle Bin if that will make you more confident. And in
Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options and click on the Delete
Files button.....make sure you also check off the box that comes up saying
"delete offline content". That will get rid of a lot of temp files for you.

As for the driver upgrade in Norton, I don't have a clue why you are
attempting to do that......but one of the 'gurus' will be along. And as for
your question about why did Windows let you d/l an incompatible program?
Hey, WinME doesn't have a crystal ball......you have to take some
responsibility for what you download, ok?? Read these news groups and learn
about your computer. 8-))

Mary
I'm not sure of this but I believe Norton has a special "removal" tool
hidden somewhere on their web site, to more effectively uninstall
their product.

With respect to a good anti virus program, over and above what Heather
has provided, I have used Avast (www.avast.com) without any problems
for the last 3 years. It's free and they also provide tech support for
the free version, unlike some of their competitors.

Hope this helps

You need to visit the Norton site and download the removal tool etc.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&osv=&osv_lvl=
(you may have to copy and past the URL into your browser.)
As for the video drivers, I wouldn't worry about them unless some of your
other programs start playing up.

OK, hang in there, my dear. Not quite sure where "over there" is, but we
hail from Canada, the US and England, just for starters.

For what it is worth, I have had WinME for 3.5 years and I have not yet
upgraded my video drivers.....that makes me nervous too!! Only phobia I
have, as Noel will tell you. So ignore that for the moment.

I will go to the Symantec website and find the tool that Dapper Dan is
talking about and there are 3 pages of manual instructions somewhere in that
so-called website.

Norton 2004 is NOT compatible with WindowsME.....so don't use it and get the
free AVG. I use EZ Trust myself and it is about $30 US.

All you have to do is hit Search and put in *Norton* and *Symantec*. That
will show you where the leftover stuff is in Windows Explorer.

OK......go to the following page and you will see the Removal Tool on there
and instructions for removing Norton that is earlier than 2003. As for
2004, don't know. Checked the Removal Tool page and it mentions that
instructions for removing 2004 are at the bottom.

Good luck......Heather (and let us know how you make out)

As Heather mentions, Computer Associates eTrust EZ Antivirus is a good
alternative with Windows ME. CA continues to offer a free 12 month license
on their eTrust EZ Armor package. You can find it he

http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

In addition to AVG, there is also Avast Home edition that is free. I've not
tried the current release but have used a previous version. The earlier
release interfered with System Restore on my system, but this appears to be
an isolated problem. It generally works well with Windows ME.

Ok, slow going here. Symantec does not reconize any
symantec product on my computor, so must be getting some
where. There is no remove exe tool for Norton 04. The
search worked great,( norton, then symantec) was scared
but put the bunch of it in the recycle bin where it is
hanging out. Also checking on site each day for virus
detection. Still good there. Working on cleaning out temp
folder. Temporary internet files are cleaned out. But temp
folder is different, there are folders in there like
history, temp internet folders ect, which I need to keep,
right. So going down one by one and deleting other stand
alone files not needed. Really tired and learning
alot.Checked out avast site, home or pro, no clue there,
just looking for now. Will start new post when I get to
that point of downloading antivirus program!
Talked face to face with a tech guru and he said kill
Norton 04 best I can and not worry about the pieces parts
of it, and best to get rid of Win Me,just reformatt it
with 98 2nd Edition. Win Me has major issues, and go with
Avast. Might try avast with Me and then make decision.

You are doing very well, Mary!! Make sure the TEMP folder is the one under
C:\Windows......just above the temporary internet folder. Just leave all
the Norton/Symantec files you removed in your recycle bin until you are
comfortable with deleting them.

As for the tech telling you that WinME is full of problems, just ask him if
he has ever used it!! I find that most people (tech or otherwise) that say
that, have either NEVER used it......or have only seen by techs when they do
have a problem. But all operating systems can have problems. I shudder
when I remember all that I had with Windows 95.

When you have a question, feel free to post. And I am not quite sure why
you won't download AVG or AVAST......you are playing with fire if you go on
the Internet without an antivirus program or a firewall, my dear. I do hope
you have the free Zone Alarm firewall on there.

Cheers......Heather

that
so-called website.

Norton 2004 is NOT compatible with WindowsME.....so

don't use it and get
the
free AVG. I use EZ Trust myself and it is about $30 US.

All you have to do is hit Search and put in *Norton*

and *Symantec*. That
will show you where the leftover stuff is in Windows

Explorer.

OK......go to the following page and you will see the

Removal Tool on
there
and instructions for removing Norton that is earlier

than 2003. As for
2004, don't know. Checked the Removal Tool page and it

mentions that
instructions for removing 2004 are at the bottom.

Good luck......Heather (and let us know how you make

out)

The readme file from Norton says some video drivers for
windows 98/Me may display corruption or an apparent

system
lock up when an Auto-Protect alert is generated. To
correct the problem, upgrade to the latest version of

the
video driver!!!How??? Also symantec tech wrote back and

I

Mary......until one of the others helps you, please
listen to a couple of
things.

First....tech support at Norton is not good......so

don't
wait for a reply.
And more importantly, you MUST put an antivirus

program
on your computer if
you are going to access the internet. AVG is a good,
free program.....go to
www.grisoft.com and download it. Don't forget to

update
the virus
definitions. But do make sure that Norton is

uninstalled
first, before
opening any other antivirus program.

As for remnants of Norton in your C:\Windows TEMP

folder,
delete them.
Leave them in the Recycle Bin if that will make you

more
confident. And in
Internet Explorer, go to Tools/Internet Options and

click
on the Delete
Files button.....make sure you also check off the box
that comes up saying
"delete offline content". That will get rid of a

lot of
temp files for you.

As for the driver upgrade in Norton, I don't have a

clue
why you are
attempting to do that......but one of the 'gurus'

will be
along. And as for
your question about why did Windows let you d/l an
incompatible program?
Hey, WinME doesn't have a crystal ball......you have

to
take some
responsibility for what you download, ok?? Read

these
news groups and learn
about your computer. 8-))

install-
uninstall but crap still laying around all over the
place-

from
symantec tech guys, afraid to download again- so no
antivirus here, scary-and never heard of AVG

Please
help, I am computor illereate-Need software
