Default Windows Updates have caused problems

I'm not sure if this is the correct group for this, but it
seemed the closest. If I'm wrong, please re-direct me. I
recently installed some critical updates for Windows 98
and I have had several problems since. I have eliminated
most of them, however, FreeCell is still giving problems:

It never completely loads the game table...that you can
see. The cards are there because if you click on what
appears to be empty desktop, it will move cards to the
freecells. Then if you exit the game, you get the "This
program has performed an illegal operation..." error. Here
are the details:

freecell caused a general protection fault in module
freecell.exe at 000:00003de7

I don't know specifically what updates were involved since
several were selected at once and installed. Has this been
encountered elsewhere and is there a fix. I love my
freecell.
