Default IE6 will not access reently visited websites

A friend of mine is still using Windows ME and has come across a problem
whereby he can access websites that he has NOT visited before, but some
websites visited recently are now not accessible. From some reason he cannot
access any antivirus sites.

Does anyone have an ideas? Eg a particular virus or picece of malware?

I realise that using ME is not the best of plans for a work pc, but he runs
is own business so updating it is not all that easy.

He is using AVG as his antivirus software.

Cheers

From some reason he cannot access any antivirus sites.

There are quite a number of malware programs, some simply ad serving, that
block access to many sites including those from the major AV vendors.

He is using AVG as his antivirus software.

Paid or free? What is he using to detect and prevent spyware and the
like? Is AVG updating its signatures regularly or are these also being
blocked? Can he access a site such as Trend Micro's Housecall
(http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) and if so can he run an online scan?

That's what makes me think there is a virus/malware, but the two programs so
far (AVG and Adware) haven't found anything, but then they cannot update
themselves. Both programs just sit there trying to connect but nothingever
happens.

Did try the trendmicro site, but with that one IE just sat there doing
nothing.

Free, he's never had a problem with it before, apparently.

I think I'm going to try and convince him he needs to spend a little bit of
money on some AV software rather than relying on freeware.

Unfortunately he is using the free version, not sure what firewall he is
using. Did try to get to Trend Micro, but that website never finished
loading, the same is true of very other AV website I can think of.

He's already got an adware program which found nothing either. He managed
to download the latest AV updates via another computer, and still AVG did not
find anything.

He is going to try Firefox to see if the problem is limited to IE6.

I posted here in case anyone else has had similar problems with Windows ME,
it's not an OS I've come across much, like most people I skipped from W98 to
W2K and then to XP.

I suspect the problem has nothing to do with the OS, or rather Win Me as
such, and very much to do with malware and how users look after their
systems.

It will be interesting to hear whether the problem is confined to just IE
or whether the problem is more general. The user could test this by
checking whether they can ping and tracert to various sites on the net
from a DOS prompt. If no then the problem could be due to an infected or
damaged winsock stack (LSPFix might be of help here
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm) or even null entries for various sites placed
in the hosts file (plain text file named "hosts", no extension, found in
the Windows folder).
