MS Backup
The errors that I keep having with this app. are from [index.dat]
and [schedlog.txt] running in the background while the back up is running. I have closed all running app. on system except explorer. I know what [schedlog.txt] is for Task Scheduler. I do not know what [index.dat] is. It resides in temporary files, history, cookies. Also, MyBackup.qic is also busy. All state that they cannot be compared or restored!??? [in report] Thank-you. |

MS Backup
Those are all "normal" errors, index.dat is used by Internet Explorer and
the cookie cache to keep track of entries and will always be in use. Having MyBackup.qic showing as busy indicates that you are storing your backup on the same drive you're trying to back up and this is a bad, BAD idea. Always back up to a different drive than the one in use. -- Richard G. Harper [MVP Shell/User] * PLEASE post all messages and replies in the newsgroups * for the benefit of all. Thank-you!
I will use a cd. This [overwrite] option was the course that I took when using the backup app. If this was bad choice, why is it in the options, and worse yet, I wonder how many people out there are not backing up correctly? MS Backup
These days most folks don't use backup, they use a disk imaging program to
create a clone of the entire hard drive at once. Much faster and much easier than MSBACKUP. Remember it was written in the days when folks used either floppy diskettes or tape drives for backup. -- Richard G. Would not a floppy be to small? I have 1.44 MB, that would be too small,
True? This is a total system backup not a money file or just doc files. I think you mean [burn a cd] image of this. "Richard G. Harper" wrote in message ... Personal CD burners did not exist when MS Backup was written. People did
use a series of floppies if they did not have a tape unit. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Jim" wrote in message ... MS Backup
Thank-you Ron,
I was around in the oldie goldie IBM 360/370 days, and with pdp11 workstations in the lab. I never had to worry about this stuff much. Professional staff at university did all this for us. I will make a mirror of it on a cd. The question I have is what is it doing when it backs up to Mybackup.qic. Is this not a compressed version of what is sent to Seagate or other online libraries at a fee? "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... Personal CD burners did not exist when MS Backup was written. MS Backup
Jim,
I only used MS Backup up until the first time I needed it and it failed me. That is when I bought my first "speedy" 2X CD burner and put a second drive in my PCs. In my view, a backup program must work 100% of the time and over the years in these newsgroups, I have found this is not the case for MS Backup. When I want to back something up, I either make an image on a second hard drive or, depending on the size, use a CD. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Jim" wrote in message ...
