Windows ME Help Center Error
The error message you are seeing when attempting to open Help & Support is
probably the result of installing the recent KB911562 hotfix either via Automatic Update or from the Windows Update site. The following should fix the problem: Download and install MDAC 2.8 SP1 from http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...f/MDAC_TYP.EXE Check whether you can now access Help & Support. You should hopefully now be able to do this. Now visit the Windows Update site download and install KB911562 again.. Don't worry the patch for MDAC 2.8 SP1 has none of the problems associated with the patch for MDAC 2.8 which is I suspect the version you are running at present. Please post back and let us know how you got on. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] Jim N Jim wrote: I received the floowing from Help & Support "The initialization of the Help Center failed. Tks Mike - Help & Support is running fine now - but - I can't create a

What is the exact error message you see when attempting to create a system restore checkpoint? Knowing this should help in finding the cause and therefore what to do to solve the problem. One question if I may. Do you recall when you first installed the KB911562 hotfix which is what probably broke Help & Restore. You can check this by looking at your update history on the Windows Update site. I really would appreciate this information if possible. Thanks. -- Mike Maltby |

I downloaded kb911562 0n 4-10-06 and for Restore I can neither create a
restore point and there are no other restore points to go back to. Jim,
Thanks for the information as to when you first downloaded the broken version of KB911562. You say you cannot create a checkpoint but without more information there is little that I or anyone else can do to help you. What EXACTLY happens and what do you see when attempting to create a system restore checkpoint? Naturally if you are unable to make a checkpoint then its unlikely the system can either so having no checkpoints doesn't really come as a surprise. Do you have any idea as to when this problem might have started? In the absence of any information to work with my first suggestion is to reset system restore as follows: Control Panel | System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting, check "Disable System Restore", immediately reboot and then back to Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System Restore" and once again immediately reboot. Now try creating a checkpoint. Any luck? If not how big is the \_RESTORE folder on the C:\ drive? To fully see this folder in Windows Explorer you will have to enable the viewing of all hidden files and folders. Do this in Windows Explorer as follows: Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected system files". Also how big are the ARCHIVE and TEMP sub-folders? -- Mike Maltby Jim N wrote: I downloaded kb911562 0n 4-10-06 and for Restore I can neither create a restore point and there are no other restore points to go back to. |

1. If I attempt to choose a restore point I receive the msg "There are
currently no restore points available" If I attempt to create a restore point I receive the msg "System Restore is not able to create a restore point." 2. I haven't used Restore for at least a year. 3. Disable and rebooted - reset and rebooted - no change. 4. Restore Folder on "C" is 960KB - I could not find the size of Archive & TEMP subblolders. 1. If I attempt to choose a restore point I receive the msg "There are currently no restore points available" As I said that's not entirely surprising if you have no check points. If I attempt to create a restore point I receive the msg "System Restore is not able to create a restore point." Was that all? Nothing about needing to reboot first? Since resetting SR hasn't helped, you might want to try the following which repairs certain damage to the registry which can be one of the reasons for being unable to create a checkpoint: Run SCANREG /FIX from a command prompt such as Start | Run. Note that the system will re-boot so don't have any applications open when doing this. 2. I haven't used Restore for at least a year. So not much point in trying to establish what changes have been made to the system since then. :-( 3. Disable and rebooted - reset and rebooted - no change. There goes the simple fix! 4. Restore Folder on "C" is 960KB - I could not find the size of Archive & TEMP subfolders. I did explain how to do this using Windows Explorer. I have copied what you need to do below. Knowing the sizes would be helpful. To fully see this folder in Windows Explorer you will have to enable the viewing of all hidden files and folders. I ran SCANREG and it stated that there was an error in the registry and it
would fix it and restart. During restart rec'd msg "unable to initialize anitvirus scanning engine database files" and continued w/restart. Went to restore and was able to create a restore point. I may have found one of the problems in the in 'C' There is a folder_ RESTORE and one _RESTO1. Each has the same subfolders. RESTO1 subfolder ARCHIVE has 9 files and is 35.5MB & TEMP has 4 files and is 128KB. In RESTORE ARCHIVE has 0 bytes and 0 files and TEMP has 5 files and 192KB. At present I am able to create new restore points only and unable to initialize antivirus program. "Mike M" wrote: Jim N wrote: 1.
