Default If I Re-format ... able to get all updates for Windows ME??

If I re-format my computer and re-install the entire operating system,
will I still be able to get all the updates to Windows ME to bring it
to where it is now (minus, of course, the headache)??

I've already overlaid the operating system to try to fix the problem
-- no joy. Problems: long hesitation when loading new pages or
pressing the [back] button to re-load prior pages. Also, error every
time I close Windows Explorer window -- "Explorer has caused an error
in unknown. Explorer will now close." (Real helpful error message,
Microsoft.) Frequently get the same error when loading pages in
Internet Explorer -- it's the same error but it seems to be caused by
something in Javascript. Can't narrow it down any further than that.

I cannot afford to buy a new operating system right now.

Thanks.

Barb

Barb,

You _should_ be able to still get all the necessary updates from the
Windows Update site however the site has been "playing up" for the past
few weeks and often mistakenly identifies PCs accessing the site using
Windows Me and also the older Win 98 as being Macs! If this happens to
you you will just have to keep on trying until you manage to get through
to the site proper.

Make sure that the first patch you install is the 290700 patch for system
restore as until you install this patch system restore is dead in the
water and won't be available to you to get you out of any problems you
might encounter.

Thanks, Mike. The last time I visited the updates site at Microsoft
from my computer, I got an error message -- something to do with Mac
Os. I wasn't sure if they were still going to provide updates even
though they were no longer providing support.

I'm in the process of backing up my "important stuff" now so I can
wipe this puppy clean. If that doesn't work, it's going out the
window and I'll be buying a lot of pencils

Don't know if this would help and it depends where you live, but if you go
to Windows Me General, Gary S Terhume an MVP is offering anyone who wants
them a couple of CD's with all updates for the price of posting, well he
said "three bucks to cover expenses"
Have a look under the subject ME Update not working [continued]
Hope that helps.

As a service, I provide a two CD set that will update Win98/98SE/ME fully.
If you want a copy, it's three bucks to cover expenses. Write to:

Thanks for stepping in Gary, and I apologies for the typo in your surname.
Hopefully the OP will return and see your kind offer.

No problem, Joan. One last caveat -- they're for English Windows only.
Thought I'd make everything perfectly clear, s.
